The Seat Leon would then take the relay from 2014 to 2019 and the Seat Arona landed its very first win in 2021

The Renault 7, a R5 sedan, was sold exclusively in Spain from 1974 to 1984.

Renault was the most popular carmaker in Spain without interruption from 1985 to 1994 and from 1996 to 2005, also topping the models charts with the Renault 5 in 1981 and 1982, the Renault 9 in 1983, the Renault 11 from 1984 to 1986, the Renault 19 in 1989 and 1990, the Clio in 1991 and 1992 and the Megane in 2004 and 2005.

The Ford Escort topped the Spanish charts in 1994 and 1995.

Ford would briefly take control of the brands ranking in 1995, placing the Escort at #1 in 1994 and 1995 and the Focus at #1 in 2002 and from 2006 to 2008. Citroen ended 10 connective years of reign by Renault in 2006, but placed the Xsara #1 in 1999. Opel also took the models #1 honours with the Kadett in 1988 and the Astra in 1993, while Peugeot had the 206 #1 in 2001.

  1. I remember some controversy back in 1987: The Seat Ibiza was #1 when including the sales in the Canary Islands, which were considered at that time as export sales. Otherwise it would have been #2 behind the Opel Kadett. In 1988 both brands claimed their child had been the best seller in Spain, adding the typical * “Canary Islands included” or ** “Canary Islands excluded”

  2. When I was a teenager every year I passed my holidays in Spain, in Marbella near the sea with my parents. We had a flat there with sea view. I remembered the majority of cars passing: Fords Fiesta, Escort, Taunus, Granada, Seats 124, 127, 131, 132, Ibiza, Renaults 14, Super5, 11, 9… imported cars were quite expensive in the 80´s but I saw good ones like Jaguars, Porsches and Ferraris in that location.

  3. Once as a kid i went on holidays in Spain and i remember seeing the Renault 7 for the first time and thinking: “What the hell…that Renault 5 has grown a hunchback!”

    1. Kimmi – I had exactly the same experience!!! I couldn’t believe that there was a French car I didn’t know about and that wasn’t even sold in France! 🙂
      Thanks for sharing.
      Cheers,

Well, don´t need to say i´m from Spain!
