It’s this time of the year when we feature a ranking of the best-selling models in the world. We are two months early compared to last year. This time we also have a brands ranking courtesy of Car Industry Analysis. Toyota (+3.7%) remains by far the most popular marque in the world with 9.65 million cars sold this year. Far, far away is Volkswagen (-1.6%) while Ford (-1.3%) takes the third place like in 2024. BYD (+2.9%) reaches 4.2 million sales and stays in 4th place ahead of Hyundai (-0.6%). Honda (-9.5%) is in great difficulty but manages to stay #6 above Suzuki (+1.4%). Other gainers further down include Kia (+1.5%) and Geely (+65.2%) up five spots to #11. Wuling (+20.2%), Changan (+15.1%) and Skoda (+13%) also shine below.

The Tesla Model Y ranks #2 like in 2024.

Now onto the models ranking. As always there are detailed notes alongside each model to help you understand how the total volume has been calculated, and find your way in the maze of different rebadges. Note the actual figures for each model may increase slightly as we add more countries to the total. In this context the Toyota RAV4 (-4%) holds onto the top spot for the second year running despite a YoY loss, keeping the Tesla Model Y (-6.8%) at bay. 43% of the RAV4’s 2025 volume comes from the US, 27% from China, 7% from Europe and 2.6% from Japan. As for the Model Y, 39% comes from China, 33% from the US and 14% from Europe.

The start of 2026 has been horrendous for the RAV4 due to a difficult generation changeover, whereas Tesla models enjoyed a YoY surge thanks to particularly low year-ago volumes. This points to the Model Y potentially reclaiming the lead in 2026.

The Ford F-Series climbs onto the podium in 2025.

We have some significant changes just below, with the Ford F-Series (+8.3%) establishing itself onto the overall podium thanks to very strong sales. 83% comes from the US, 15% from Canada and 1.5% from Mexico. The Honda CR-V (-3.3%) is also up one spot to #4 at 49% from the US and 36% from China. There is a surprise at #5: the Toyota Corolla Cross (-3.2%) overtakes the Corolla (-18.5%) sinking from #3 to #6. The Chevrolet Silverado (+3.4%) stays at #7 while the Toyota Camry (+9.5%) passes the Hyundai Tucson (+4.2%) to #8. The Toyota Hilux (+10.7%) cracks the Top 10 at #10 and is once again the model that reached the biggest amount of countries at #1 at 24. Notice also the Wuling Hongguang Mini EV (+60.9%) up 33 spots to #15 and the Geely Xingyuan aka EX2 (+777.7%) up to #16 for its first full year in market.
