After a month of July artificially inflated by the new bi-annual license plate change, August comes back to ‘normal’, with sales up a more reasonable 19% year-on-year to 3,698 registrations. Putting this in the context of being the 2nd month of the new half-year of registrations (so equivalent to a month of February in previous years), this figure is actually relatively low: 10,617 new vehicles were registered last February. Low sales traditionally means a more volatile models ranking in Ireland, and this month is a case in point: the BMW 5 Series delivers an astonishing pole position, and by far, thanks to 239 sales and 6.5% share, up from #28 in July and #11 year-to-date. The VW Golf remains #2 and still leads year-to-date while the Skoda Octavia is up 3 spots on July to round up the podium.

The other massive surprise in Ireland this month is the 4th place of the Dacia Duster. The Duster had struck a chord with Irish consumers as soon as it launched here, along with the French-Romanian brand, at the start of the year like in the UK, but its previous best was a 12th place last April. With 121 sales and 3.3% share, it now enters a new dimension, making Ireland one of only 7 countries in the world where the Duster managed to break into the monthly Top 5 with Romania, Morocco, France, Russia, Argentina and potentially Colombia. As a result, Dacia breaks into the Irish Top 10 brands for the very first time this month at #10 and 3.9% of the market, above Renault (#11), Peugeot (#12) and Citroen (#18)!

Other great performers this month include the BMW 3 Series up 14 spots to #10, the Skoda Rapid up a huge 77 ranks to #11, Audi A4 up 15 to #12, Toyota RAV4 up 9 to #13, Seat Leon up 28 to #22 and the Peugeot 2008 up 30 to break into the Irish Top 50 for the first time at #43.
