The Swedish new car market edges up 3.1% year-on-year in 2021 to 300.983 registrations. Local behemoth Volvo (-8.5%) easily remains in the brands lead but loses two percentage points of market share, going from 18% to 16%. Volkswagen (-11.5%) loses even more, from 14.7% to 12.6%. The winner this year is Kia (+18.6%) leaping from 8.6% of the market to 9.9%, snapping its first ever monthly crown in September and ranking inside the Top 2 for the entire 2nd Half of the year. Toyota (+5.3%) edges past the market growth to remain a solid 4th with 7.9% share while Mercedes (-7.9%) stays in 5th. BMW (-8.6%) overtakes Audi (-16.5%) for 6th place with Skoda (-10.8%), Peugeot (+9.2%) and a sensational Ford (+62.1%) rounding out the Top 10. Chinese newcomer MG lands directly at #16 and peaked at a fantastic #7 in June while its compatriot Lynk & Co starts at #29 and peaked at #21 in November

Over in the models ranking, the Volvo S/V60 (-19.7%) posts a third consecutive win despite a heavy fall. In a very volatile ranking throughout the year, it only topped the charts four times: in January, February, March and June. Volvo monopolises the podium for the 2nd year in a row but the order changes: the XC40 (+18.9%) passes the XC60 (-2.8%) to rank #2. The XC60 was #1 in May. The Kia Ceed (+66.5%) scores the largest gain in the Top 10 and climbs four spots to #4, ranking #1 in July, October and November. It distances the Kia Niro (+17.3%) which ranked #1 in August and September. Below the Toyota RAV4 (+15.7%) up three spots to #6, the VW ID.4 is the best-selling 2021 launch and ranked #1 in April. Finally the Tesla Model Y ranked #1 in December but, having been launched late in the year, only appears at #24 for 2021. The Tesla Model 3 for its part is up 41.5% and eight spots to #12, the MG ZS lands at #17, the Skoda Enyaq at #30 and the Ford Mustang Mach-E at #50.
