Sweden July 2026: BEVs at 42.6% share, Toyota (+45.7%), Kia (+41.6%) shine, BMW iX3 #8

The BMW iX3 lodges a second straight Top 10 finish in Sweden.

18,684 new cars hit Swedish roads in July, a +5.7% year-on-year lift. The year-to-date tally is now up 1.2% to 160,535. Rechargeable cars hold no less than 66.4% share vs. 62.3% a year ago and 66.1% so far this year. In the detail, BEVs are up 29.1% to 7,967 units and 42.6% share vs. 34.9% in July 2025 and 41.6% year-to-date (+19.6%) while PHEVs drop -8.1% to 4,448 and 23.8% share vs. 27.4% a year ago and 24.5% year-to-date (-5.3%). 

Local behemoth Volvo (+11.8%) widens the gap with #2 Volkswagen (-3.6%) at 16.2% share vs. 12.6%. Kia (+41.6%) and Toyota (+45.7%) both surge year-on-year while Mercedes (-1.8%) is up two spots on last month to round out the Top 5. Cupra (+2%) is the only additional gainer in the Top 10, as BMW (-0.7%) is stable and Peugeot (-4%) edges down but Audi (-22.6%) and most strikingly Skoda (-40.5%) implode. Note Skoda achieved its first ever podium finish in July 2025 and pays the price of such a high comparison base. Fiat (+49.4%) and Ford (+46.6%) soar just as BYD (+351.5%) is up three ranks on June to #13 with 1.6% share, both new records. Subaru (+3112.5%) recuperates from artificially low year-ago volumes, with Xpeng (+230.2%), Zeekr (+86%), Lynk & Co (+63.4%) and Citroen (+59.8%) also impressive. Tesla is down -60.1% to #31.

Over in the models charts, Volvo monopolises the podium for the second time this year after February. The XC60 (+13.9%) keeps the lead above the EX/XC40 (+60.2%) and EX30 (+21.7%). The VW Tiguan (+89.9%) is the best of the rest at #4 and almost doubles its sales year-on-year. The Fiat Ducato (+62.7%) rounds out the Top 5 due to campervan registrations. The Kia EV3 (+7.9%) is up four spots on June to #6 while the VW ID.7 (-23.9%) up 6 to #7 but frankly down YoY. The new BMW iX3 continues to impress at #8, its second consecutive (and ever) Top 10 finish. The Kia EV5 (#12) is the best selling recent launch ahead of the Kia EV2 (#15). The VW Polo reappears at #24 but this could be sales of the ID.Polo. If anyone from Sweden knows whether that’s the case please comment on this article.
