Germany January 2012: Audi A6 and VW Tiguan hit highest ranking

Audi A6

* NOW UPDATED with the Top 300 best-selling models! Click on title to see. Thanks Austin *

Car sales in Germany are stable year-on-year in January at 210,195 registrations. The VW Golf/Plus/Jetta continues to dominate, reaching its best market share since last September at 8.9% thanks to 18,764 sales. The podium is 100% VW and identical to the Full Year 2011 ranking with the Passat at #2 and Polo at #3, both grabbing 3.1% share. The Mercedes C Class is up 2 spots on December to #4 with 5,485 units.

VW Tiguan

Exceptional performance of the Audi A6/A7 this month: with 4,537 sales and 2.2% it reaches a record 5th position, its highest ever monthly ranking in Germany since the launch of the A6 nameplate in 1994. Its previous best was #6 in July 2005 when it sold 6,646 units for a 2.5% market share. Note the A7 had not launched in 2005 but this month the split A6/A7 is 3,998/539, meaning the A6 alone would rank #6 and still equal its best ever ranking.

Another model reaches its highest ever German monthly ranking in January: the VW Tiguan ranks #7 with 3,912 sales and 1.9% share, it’s the second time the Tiguan reaches that position after February 2011 and only the third time since the launch of the Tiguan nameplate in 2007 that the model breaks into the monthly Top 10.

Mercedes B Class

We are starting to see the effects of the 2nd generation Mercedes B Class spreading across the country, with the model up a whopping 14 spots on December to break into the Top 10 for the first time since last March at #10 and 3,482 sales. Other great performers this month include the Opel Zafira up 12 ranks to #21, the VW Up! holding itself to a promising #23 with 2,153 units and 1%, Hyundai ix35 up to #41 and Audi Q3 breaking into the Top 50 for the first time at #44.

Mazda CX-5

Further down the ranking, notice the Mercedes ML Class at #54, Kia Rio at #64, BMW 7 Series at #91, Range Rover Evoque at #119 with 386 sales and 0.3%, VW Beetle at #123 and 359 units, Citroen DS5 at #153 with 217 sales and Opel Ampera at #193 and 110 units. Two models have their very first month of sales in Germany this month: the Subaru XV delivers 26 units (#248) and the Mazda CX-5 has its first 7 sales (#279).

Previous month: Germany December 2011: VW Up! already at #22

One year ago: Germany January 2011: New VW Passat up to #2, BMW 5 Series up to #5

@Miguel: Ford Germany is producing cars in Cologne/Niehl since 1931, and its not in the south of Germany we call it more the Mid-West of Germany.
@Sonico: we are not forced to buy Volkswagens, but if you talk about Volkswagen in a whole you should add up the sales of Audi+VW+Seat+Skoda+Lambo+Bently since all this brands belong to Volkswagen Group, also Porsche very soon will be fully integrated

Steam, Skodas are imported but they are from VW Group. I30 is made in Germany, the real first imported car is Qashqai.

The Hyundai i30 is produced in Czech Republic as far as I know. There is a design-center in Germany (Ruesselsheim) developing Hyundai cars, but to me the i30 is an import-car. And I think Hyundai still is a korean brand …

i30 was developed by german engineers.

In my opinian the first real 100% foreign car in Germany is Qashqai.

    Here is a brand-ranking:
    http://www.autobild.de/bilder/die-beliebtesten-marken-im-januar-2012-2855562.html#bild31|ref=http://www.autobild.de/artikel/neuzulassungen-januar-2012-2855251.html

    These are the top-ten-brands:

    1. Volkswagen 50.029 – 2,3 %
    2. Mercedes 19.117 + 13,1 %
    3. BMW/Mini 17.024 – 6,9 %
    4. Ford 15.185 + 0,2 %
    5. Audi 14.996 + 4,8 %
    6. Opel 13.579 – 9,7 %
    7. Renault 10.061 – 17,3 %
    8. Skoda 8.425 + 0,9 %
    9. Hyundai 7.482 + 51,1 %
    10. Citroen 6.093 -1,9 %

    Total sales 210.195 – 0,4 %

Actually january was not too good for Volkswagen because the brand performed worse than the market. But there are still some Volkswagen left in Germany … ;)

January was a real bad month for Opel and excellent for Hyundai.

    Most successful import-cars:

    1. Skoda Octavia
    2. Skoda Fabia
    3. Hyundai i30
    4. Mini
    5. Hyundai i10
    6. Nissan Qashqai
    7. Seat Ibiza
    8. Fiat 500
    9. Toyota Yaris
    10. Renault Megane
    11. Hyundai ix35

Seems to be a weak month for Renault, Toyota, Fiat. Usually these brands sell better in Germany. Hyundai is getting stronger and stronger.

    Miguel :
Ford sells well too because beeing an American brand, has a huge factory in Koln, south of Germany since the fourties.

Ford used to sell better in the past, nowadays usually Audi, Mercedes, BMW are selling more cars than Ford (in Germany). It’s the same with Opel.

In January Ford D is up almost 2% in Germany. Good start.

That’s wrong, Ford is up only 0,2 % vs. Jan 2011.

The Germans has several car marques with a large number of models and they, of course, prefer their cars. Mercedes is quite appreciated in Germany as well as Bmw. Ford sells well too because beeing an American brand, has a huge factory in Koln, south of Germany since the fourties.

    @Rick Maverick
it’s normal to see only German cars. There so many german brand: Volkswagen and Opel… then Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz sell so much their luxury cars and are be able to entry in the top 10 without great problem.

I thought that the E-Klasse sold more cars than 5-er and A6. I was’n right.
