Germany September 2026: Tesla Model Y best-seller, BEVs up 94.7% to 34.5% share
The Tesla Model Y is the best-selling vehicle in Germany in September.
New car sales in Germany advance 9% year-on-year in September to 256,774 units. This is a particularly good result given September 2025 was already up 12.8% on the year prior. The year-to-date volume is now up 5.3% to 2,221,798. BEV sales shoot up 94.7% year-on-year to 88,599 and 34.5% share vs. 19.3% in September 2025 and are up 58.1% year-to-date to 604,144 and 27.2% share vs. 18.1% over the same period in 2025.
In the brands ranking, Volkswagen (-6.1%) is down to a paltry 16.5% share vs. 17.8% so far this year. Mercedes (+6.2%) stays in 2nd place while Skoda (+5.4%) overtakes BMW (-2.4%) for third spot. Audi (+4%) and Opel (+6%) are also shy and mean the Top 6 brands all trail the market. In contrast Tesla (+268.7%) skyrockets to #7 overall with 12,552 sales and 4.9% share, the carmaker’s best result since a record-breaking December 2022 showing (#5 with 17,501 sales and 5.6% share). Dacia (+25.7%) excels and returns inside the Top 10 for the first time since last June at #9. As it is the case across Europe (and the world), the Chinese stand out this month, with BYD up 85.6%, MG up 60.8%, Leapmotor up 191.4%, Xpeng up 418.7%, GWM up 229% and Lynk & Co up 151.1%.
Over in the models charts, the Tesla Model Y (+260.9%) almost quadruples its sales year-on-year to spectacularly claim the pole position with over 8,000 sales. This is shaping up to be a record month for the nameplate in Europe, after also ranking #1 in France, Iceland, Ireland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Denmark and Finland. The Model Y tops the German charts outright for the second time ever after September 2022. The VW Golf (-12.1%) is relegated to 2nd place above the VW Tiguan (+15.4%) and T-Roc (-17.3%). The Mercedes GLC (+76.1%) confirms the new generation’s warm reception while the Tesla Model 3 (+284.7%) shoots up to #6, its best result since topping the charts in December 2022. The BMW X1 (+94.6%), Skoda Elroq (+63%) and Mini lineup (+34.1%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10.
