Brazil September 2021: Sales implode -28.4%, first win for Hyundai HB20, first podium for Jeep Compass

The Hyundai HB20 is the best-selling vehicle in Brazil for the first time.

The Brazilian market is hit hard by the microchip and parts crisis in September with sales down a damning -28.4% year-on-year to just 142.354. The year-to-date tally is now up 13.2% to 1.469.862 and we have downgraded our 2021 Forecast for Brazil to 2.03m units and +4%. Fiat (-25.7%) remains the best-selling carmaker in the country but sees its share thaw to 20.4% vs. 24.6% in August and 26.9% in July. Volkswagen (-39.1%) suffers but stays 2nd while Chevrolet seems to have bottomed out as factories come back online, up 3 spots on August to #3 and down -43.4% year-on-year compared with -68.9% in August and -66.5% in July. The next four brands all resist better than the market: Hyundai (-13.2%) stays in 4th place, Toyota (-6%) is down two ranks on last month to #5, Jeep (-3.5%) is down one to #6 and Honda (-11.6%) up one to #7. Renault (-52.4%) is now the hardest hit in the Top 10, whereas Chery (+84.8%), Peugeot (+77.9%) and Citroen (+82.5%) all post fantastic year-on-year gains. Further down, Land Rover (+16.8%) and BMW (+7%) shine.

The Jeep Compass secures a first ever podium finish in September.

Over in the models ranking, we have a new leader: after spending countless months in 2nd place during the reign of the Chevrolet Onix, the Hyundai HB20 (-16.6%) finally scores its first ever monthly win in Brazil thanks to a little over 7.000 sales and a round 5% share. This ends six consecutive months of Fiats in the top spot and propels the HB20 to #2 year-to-date below the Fiat Strada. The Fiat Toro (+22.8%) is up six spots on August to land in 2nd place while the Jeep Compass (+12.9%) lands its very first Brazilian podium finish at #3, eclipsing its previous best of #4 hit just last month. Leader in August, the Fiat Strada (-51.4%) lose more than half its September 2020 volume and falls to #4. The VW T-Cross (+21.2%) and Toyota Hilux (+22.9%) are the only additional gainers in the Top 10. Further down, notice the Chevrolet Onix back up 52 spots on last month to #11 and the Chevrolet Onix Plus up 64 to #14.
