Brazil August 2021: Fiat faraway leader, Jeep and Chery break records, market off -8.6%

The Fiat Strada is the best-selling vehicle in Brazil in August.

The Brazilian new vehicle market accelerates its fall with a -8.6% year-on-year drop in August to 158.514 units, leading to a year-to-date tally now up 20.7% to 1.327.535 units. Fiat (+24.5%) once again ignores the challenging context to fly up to 24.6% share vs. 23.1% so far this year. In contrast Volkswagen (-31.8%) is in difficulty and drops below its YTD level at 14.7% vs. 15.5%. After breaking its share record last month at 11.5%, Toyota (+50.8%) continues to excel with a second-best 11% of the Brazilian market vs. 8.6% so far this year, distancing Hyundai (-9.6%) which resists better than the market. Jeep (+29.5%) brilliantly breaks its all-time share record for the 4th straight month at 8.5% whereas Chevrolet (-68.9%) continues to see its sales devastated by factory closures triggered by the microchip shortage. Renault (+20.7%), Honda (+10.3%) and Nissan (+0.9%) swim upstream with year-on-year gains, but the best performer of the month is just below at #10: Chery (+189%) smashes its volume and share records this month to 4.717 and 3%, with its previous best hit just last month being 3.763 and 2.3%. Peugeot (+113.6%) and Citroen (+80.4%) also impress below.

Model-wise, Fiat monopolises the podium again but in a different order than last month: the Strada (+4.8%) takes the lead above the Argo (+27.7%) and Mobi (+76.3%). As a result the Argo climbs to #2 year-to-date and the Mobi to #4. The Jeep Compass (+30.6%) is the best-selling non-Fiat model this month, up three spots on July to #4 and going well against the market drop. The Hyundai HB20 (-20%) struggles and rounds out the Top 5 ahead of the Jeep Renegade (+28.8%), VW T-Cross (+3.8%) and Fiat Toro (+38.6%). The Chevrolet S10 (+132.6%) is the only nameplate from the American brand to perform well this month, up two spots on July to #10 overall to the opposite of the Chevrolet Tracker (-78.1%), Onix (-96.1%) and Onix Plus (-95.5%). The Toyota Corolla Cross (#11) is the best-selling recent launch above the Chery Tiggo 8 (#32), VW Taos (#38) and Chery Tiggo 3X (#52). Notice also the Toyota Hilux (+62.2%), Renault Kwid (+66.5%), VW Nivus (+68.7%), Ford Ranger (+70.4%), Citroen C4 Cactus (+121.8%) and Chery Tiggo 5X (+125.8%) all sporting spectacular gains.
