New car sales are up a very healthy 15% year-on-year in May in Hungary to 5,771 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 26,972 units, up a strong 21% on 2013. These figures however remain way below pre-crisis levels of about a decade ago as pictured below. Another element curbing the overall enthusiasm is the fact that so far this year 78% of all new car sales have gone to companies and only 22% to private buyers. In this context, the Skoda Octavia confirms it is by far the preferred choice in Hungary with 368 sales and 6.4% share, adding up to 1,842 and 6.8% year-to-date.
The Opel Astra takes the second spot in May at 215 units and 3.7%, helping Opel grab the #1 spot in the brands ranking. The Suzuki SX4 continues to impress and jumps back onto the podium at #3 with 170 sales and 2.9% while the Skoda Rapid reaches never-seen before heights, up a further 3 spots on April to land at a beautiful 4th spot with 2.9% share. Finally notice the Opel Antara back in the Top 10 at #8 and 2.1%, making Hungary the only country in the world with the FYR of Macedonia to allow this SUV relatively regularly inside its 10 most popular vehicles.
