2013 is the strongest ever year for new light vehicle sales in Canada, with the market gaining 4% on 2012 to reach 1.74 million registrations including December up 4% also to 113,036 units. The previous record dates back to 2002 at 1.696.803. This increase is solely due to very strong truck sales, up 7% year-on-year while car sales are flat.
The Civic is the #1 passenger car in Canada for the 16th year in a row, something Honda marketing is using.
The big event this year is the record-breaking run of the Ford F-Series. After becoming the first nameplate in the history of automobile in Canada to sell more than 100,000 units in a single year in 2012, the F-Series smashes that record again as early as October and finishes 2013 up 15% to an all-time high 122.000+ units. This means the F-Series has beaten the all-time annual volume record 3 times in the last 4 years (add 2010 with almost 98.000 units), and retained the top spot for the last 5 years in a row, pushing Ford to its best year overall since 1997.
The GMC Sierra ranks 5th in Canada this year.
The Ram Pick-up also delivers an all-time record year, up 16% to over 80.000 units, its first time crossing both the 70,000 and 80,000 annual unit-marks. For its part the Honda Civic delivers its 16th consecutive year atop the passenger cars ranking with sales down 1% to 64,063, ranking third overall and managing to shed the Hyundai Elantra which was #1 up until June and finishes #2 passenger car and #4 overall this year thanks to 54,760 units, up 7%. There is a third pick-up truck in the Top 5: the GMC Sierra is up 10% and two spots on 2012 to 46,908 sales, passing the Dodge Grand Caravan (-9%) and Ford Escape (+2%).
Hyundai Santa Fe sales are up 25% in Canada in 2013.
Further down, notice the Toyota RAV4 up 28% to #13, the Hyundai Santa Fe up 25% to #15, Ford Fusion up 21% to #18, Mazda CX-5 up 56% to #23, Honda Accord up 73% to #25, Nissan Sentra up 31% to #30, Subaru Forester up 57% to #40 and Honda Fit up 101% to #49. Finally, the Dodge Dart lands at #47 with 9,870 sales for its first full year in market.
