Taiwanese new car sales are down 33% year-on-year to 21,984 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 274,545 units, down 3% on 2011. The Toyota Corolla unsurprisingly takes the lead of the models ranking albeit with a weaker market share at 7.6% and 1,661 sales. Potentially in runout mode, the Nissan Tiida is up to #2 for the second time in the last 4 months with a strong 5.7% share and 1,256 units, followed by the Nissan Livina at 849 sales and 3.9% and the Toyota Camry with 790 units and 3.6%.

Below the Mitsubishi Veryca and the Toyota Yaris, the Toyota Wish drops 5 spots to #7 while the Hyundai Elantra and Honda Civic both break into the Taiwanese Top 10 for the very first time for these generations, at #9 with 505 sales and 2.3% and #10 with 431 and 2% respectively. Other great performers this month include the Ford Escape at #13, the BMW 5 Series up 11 ranks to #14 and the VW Golf up 17 to #15. Notice also the local Luxgen 7 SUV back in the Top 25 for the first time since last March at #21.

Taiwan-Japan relations are much different than mainland China. The news is attributing the sales contraction more to both oil and materials prices going up as well as the Ghost Festival occurring during the first half of September. This would be an unlucky time of the year to buy a car, and due to the lunar calendar this occurred in September this year compared to last year when it occurred in August.

i think this was due to the spillover effects of the anti-Japanese sentiment in China, Taiwan and HK that’s still in progress.
