Bulgaria July 2026: Dacia places Duster and Bigster inside Top 4
The Dacia Bigster is up to #4 in Bulgaria in July.
The Bulgarian new light vehicle market is up 5.3% year-on-year in July to 5,483 units, leading to a year-to-date volume up 7.5% to 34,220. Keep in mind a significant part of these registrations (up to 30%) never see Bulgarian roads as they are directly reexported to other EU countries. This month Skoda (+9.3%) overtakes traditional leader Toyota (-2.1%) to snap the brands top spot with 10.2% share. This is the third time this year that Skoda is the most popular carmaker in the country after March and April.
Dacia (-0.4%) stays at #3 and climbs to #4 in the year-to-date charts, passing sister brand Renault (+14.2%) even though the latter performs much better YoY. BMW (+18.1%), Hyundai (+14.6%) and Ford (+8.8%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10. Below, Dongfeng (+151.5%), Geely (+148.4%) and DFSK (+95.7%) stand out.
Model-wise, the Toyota Corolla (+64.5%) is a distant leader at 4.1% share, distancing the Dacia Duster (-7.8%) which was #1 a year ago in July 2025. The Hyundai Tucson (+4.5%) repeats at #3, a ranking it also holds year-to-date. The Dacia Bigster (+169.1%) is up 13 spots on June to #4 while the Skoda Octavia (+2.3%) rounds out the Top 5. The Toyota Yaris Cross (+80%) is also in great shape at #10 while the DFSK Forthing T5 Evo (+138.5%) ranks at #11.

Champion of the re-export in BG this year is Citroen. Almost 500 of all 1500 Citroens bought as of today were re-export to other countries.
Corolla sedan, made in Turkey, will increase its sales volume, because everyone excepts the new generation to be more expensive.
Almost all Skoda Kodiaqs were bought by the police.
2/3 of all Hyundai i20 were bought by one particular rent-a-car company.
Almost all Volvo XC60s were bought also by the police.
Most of Renault Megane and Clio’s sales are fleet sales to companies.
No, it doesn’t matter which car model is the best one for our government agencies like police for example, it matters only who owns the dealership, which political party rules at the moment and how corrupted all of them are. For example: Person X owns a VW dealership. The Police needs cars. The ruling party orders to Person X to deliver 100 Passats to the Police at 20 000 euros over the real price. Police pays with state money and Person X and the ruling party split the difference (20 000 euros overhead per car by 100 cars equals 2 million euros from the state money – 1 million for the dealer and 1 million for the party). Just an example!
On other hand all or almost all Chinese cars sold in the country were bought by private buyers. And yes, more and more people in BG can afford a brand new car, but many don’t do it. The population is rapidly shrinking, about 50 000 newborn babies per year and just above 100 000 deaths per year. Official population 6.3 million, real population about 5.5-5.7 million.
4.3 million registered motor vehicles in the country. Only 4-5% of all registered motor vehicles are considered new (age 0-5 years old), while over 80% are over 15 years old, as many are actually over 20, even over 30 years old. Many families have 2-3 even 4 cars, all of them over 20-25 years old, instead of one, but newer car or even brand new car.
People drive cars, which will never pass TUV for example. Cars with second hand tires, sometimes even 4 different tires, or in the winter season only 2 winter tires mounted on leading wheels and 2 summer tires on the other two wheels. Car without catalytic converters or DPFs for diesels, smoking black smoke. Cars, which are leaking oil all over the streets. Cars with suspicious suspension, squiring belts and transmissions.
You can still see Astra first generation, Golf 3, Focus MK1, Peugeot 206, Citroen Xsara Picasso and other models so old that when you put for example Hyundai IX35 next to them, the Hyundai looks like a brand new car, despite it’s over 10 years old.
So yes, the new cars sales are increasing, yes, more and more people can afford a brand new car, but also yes, the re-export is also a major part of those brand new cars sales.

Institutional transparency needs to be increased. People need to watch this and ask why the police need Kodiaq and XC 60. There are certainly cheaper SUVs like Tucson. Or Mazda with aluminum wheels. Every kid who watches American movies knows that a police car is supposed to have steel wheels because of damage.
I don’t get the idea of re-exports: You have to pay local taxes and then ask for a refund. Shipping there and back. Costs. STLA sells directly. It owns all the cars on stock. Like the dealer takes a profit and then sells it on? And in another country, Citroens are lying around in the yard? Why does Citroen tolerate this?

BG is at the bottom of the European Corruption Index, along with Hungary and Albania.
In Albania the son of the President single-handedly helped BYD capture 35% of the new car market.
Rumor has it 8 BYD YangWang U8’s were offered as a present, each filled with Yuans.
I don’t believe that 30% of cars are exported further. Bulgaria is far from Germany, where something like that can be sold.
People’s living standards are simply improving.
I think Skoda will be for the police and the public sector, which is a lot to see in Eastern Europe and Austria. I don’t think for example Kodiaq will be car for the Bulgarian household.
Lexus could be higher in BG, isn’t doing well, given the popularity of Toyota.
You might not believe this but I am afraid this doesn’t change much:
