Switzerland Full Year 2022: Tesla Model Y takes charge, sales off -5.3%

225,934 new cars found a home in Switzerland in 2022, that’s a -5.3% year-on-year decline on the 238,481 units of 2021. 4×4 sales are virtually immobile at -0.1% to 114,316 and 50.6% share vs. 48% in 2021. Petrol sales fall -15.1% to 84,815 and 37.5% share vs. 41.9% a year ago, diesel is down -18.9% to 26,286 and 11.6% share vs. 13.6%, HEV (incl. MHEV) rise 7.5% to 56,107 and 24.8% share vs. 21.9% last year, PHEV sink -15.8% to 18,355 and 8.1% share vs. 9.1% and BEV soar 26.3% to 40,173 and 17.8% share vs. 13.3% in 2021.
Volkswagen (-1.6%) manages to resist better than the market with 11.2% share while BMW (-6.2%) overtakes Mercedes (-10.6%) to rank #2. Audi (+6%) is up strongly and passes Skoda (-6.9%) to rank #4 overall. Tesla (+34.4%) is the biggest gainer in the Top 10 and advances four spots to #8 with Toyota (+14.6%) and Ford (+5.7%) also in good shape. Below, Dacia (+23.3%) is up to #11, Kia (+25.6%) to #14, Cupra (+72.2%) to #19 and DS (+38.5%) to #32.
Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+254%) ends its first full year in market directly in pole position but 2.2% share were enough to be #1 in arguably the most fragmented market in the world. The VW Tiguan (+10.5%) is up two spots on last year to land at #2, leapfrogging past the Skoda Octavia (-17.8%) and Audi Q3 (-2.1%). Leader last year, the Tesla Model 3 (-30.5%) drops to #5 in 2022 above the Toyota Yaris (-3.4%). The Skoda Enyaq (+48.4%) surges 22 ranks to break into the Top 10 at #7. Note it was #2 in November and December. The VW Golf (-1.8%), BMW X3 (-6.8%) and Dacia Sandero (+8.8%) complete the Top 10. Notice also the Ineos Grenadier making its very first appearance in any ranking in the world in December with 34 sales.
