New light vehicle sales in Mexico lift 7% year-on-year in 2022 to 1,086,060 units for a second consecutive year of 7-digit volumes. We are however still way below pre-pandemic levels as 2019 totalled 1,317,937 sales and was the weakest result since 2014. Nissan (-17.2%) keeps the overall lead for the 22nd straight year but drops 4.5 percentage points of share from 20.1% to 15.6%. Most notably the Japanese was challenged for the pole position for the first time in two decades. Chevrolet (+30.5%) climbs from 11.7% share in 2021 to 14.3% share now and was #1 for four months from July to October. Even though Nissan reclaimed the lead for the last two months of the year, the fight for #1 will be tight in 2023. Toyota (+5.8%) and Kia (+8.7%) leapfrog past Volkswagen (-12.7%) to #3 and #4 respectively, with Kia breaking its monthly share record in January at 9.4%. Mazda (+2.9%) can’t quite keep up with the market but stays in 6th place above a surging MG (+194.1%) up 8 spots to #7. Suzuki (+22.2%) and Hyundai (+11.1%) also beat the market in the remainder of the Top 10.

Over in the models aisle, the Kia Rio (+44.6%) soars into first place vs. #4 a year ago, making it the very first Korean model to top the annual Mexican charts. The Rio topples the leader of the past 6 years, the Nissan Versa (-31.1%) in complete freefall from 6.9% to 4.4% share. The Nissan Pickup (-15.6%) and Chevrolet Aveo (-16.7%) also implode below, as does the Nissan March (-17.1%) at #5. Four of the remaining 5 models in the Top 10 vastly outpace the market with double-digit gains at least: the MG 5 (+217.5%) is the most dynamic and gains 38 spots to land in 7th place. The Chevrolet Onix (+112.6%) helps the brand to new heights and is up 11 ranks to #6. The Chevrolet Captiva (+78.2%) aka Baojun 530 is also up 11 spots to #10 and the Toyota Hilux is up 25.3%. The Chevrolet S10 (#36) and MG GT (#45) are the best-selling 2022 launches.
