Mexico January 2023: Nissan NP300 best-seller, Chirey lands in market up 20.1%

The Nissan Pickup/NP300 is the best-selling vehicle in Mexico for the first time.

94,414 new light vehicles hit Mexican roads in January, a solid 20.1% year-on-year improvement. Under threat from Chevrolet last year, Nissan (+22.3%) soars to 18.2% share vs. just 10.2% for the American manufacturer this month (-12.3%). Toyota (-2.1%) is in difficulty but remains in third place. In fact the entire Top 7 brands are unchanged on December, with Volkswagen (+9.9%) and Kia (+2%) in tow and Mazda (+89.7%) and MG (+51.6%) surging ahead. No other Top 10 manufacturer manages to beat the market as Ford (+1%), Hyundai (-16.9%) and Honda (-5.1%) follow. Landing directly at a splendid 11th place with 3.2% share is Chirey. No, this is not a spelling mistake but Chery’s name in Mexico, as the manufacturer is keen to avoid a lawsuit by Chevrolet (Chevy). Also euphoric below are Cupra (+763%), Dodge (+370.9%), Fiat (+301.4%) and Seat (+231%).

Over in the models aisle, the Nissan Pickup/NP300 (+80.3%) races to the pole position with 5.7% share, for what is believed to be its first monthly win ever, and its highest share since February 2021. The Nissan Sentra (+107.3%) also breaks its ranking record at #2, eclipsing its previous best of #3 hit in December 2021. Leader over the Full Year 2022, the Kia Rio (+14.7%) can’t keep up with the market growth and ranks third for the 2nd month in a row. #1 last month, the Nissan Versa (+91.1%) drops to #4 despite a very vigorous year-on-year uptick. The Mazda2 (+419.3%) and Mazda3 (+104.8%) follow, the former hitting a new all-time high position and the latter equalling its ranking record at #6, also hit in October 2021. The Kia Seltos (+52.6%) and VW Taos (+290.2%) also impress in the remainder of the Top 10.
