Mexico August 2020: Kia (-21.6%) breaks share record, GMC (+29.1%), Land Rover (+17.9%) shine in bogged down market (-28.4%)

The new Land Rover Defender has landed in Mexico…

New light vehicle sales in Mexico remain in pretty bad shape in August at -28.4% year-on-year to 77.092 units. This is only a slightly better hold than in July (-31%), leading to a year-to-date tally down -31.2% to 586.434. For once Nissan (-26.4%) resists a little better than the market to cement its leadership at 21.5%, a full percentage point of share above its YTD level of 20.4%. Chevrolet (-29.1%), Volkswagen (-36.9%) and Toyota (-28.3%) slide further away just as Kia (-21.6%) scores the best hold in the Top 9 to break its all-time share record at 8.2%, eclipsing the 8% it hit last April. Renault (-18.3%) performs best in the Top 10, with Honda (-24.4%) and Hyundai (-27.4%) also keeping their loss below the market rate but Ford (-45.1%) and Mazda (-34.8%) not that lucky. Further down, GMC (+29.1%), Land Rover (+17.9%), Porsche (+17%), Subaru (+6.4%) and Mitsubishi (+1.6%) secure the only year-on-year gains in market while Cadillac (-1.3%), Audi (-2.4%), JAC (-9.1%), Suzuki (-11.6%), Volvo (-12.3%), Mini (-16.2%) and Peugeot (-16.8%) control their fall.

..as has the Ford Bronco Sport.

Over in the models ranking, Nissan monopolises the podium with the Versa (-27.7%), Pickup (-27.8%) and March (-12.6%), knocking the Chevrolet Beat (-33.2%) down to #4. The Kia Rio (-21.4%) returns inside the Top 5, toppling the Chevrolet Onix down to #6 while the Nissan Sentra (+16.7%) scores the only year-on-year gain in the Top 10. Below, the Hyundai Grand i10 (+36.2%), Honda City (+35.6%), VW Gol (+11.4%) and Suzuki Swift (+3.6%) are the only gainers in the remainder of the Top 40. Below the Onix, the Kia Seltos (#15) is the most popular recent launch above the Mazda CX-30 (#27) hitting its highest rank since January, the VW T-Cross (#29) and a newcomer for August: the Chevrolet Tracker (#64). We also welcome the new Land Rover Defender (#175) and Ford Bronco Sport (#255).
