The Skoda Octavia is back to #1 at home.
New car sales in the Czech Republic slide -7.1% year-on-year in 2022 to 192,087. Local behemoth Skoda (-11.3%) once again loses market share, going from 34.3% in 2021 to 32.7% now. As a reminder the brand held 36.8% in 2020. Hyundai (-7.9%) evolves roughly like the market and cements its 2nd place ahead of Volkswagen (-4.7%). Toyota (+25%) posts a spectacular gain but remains in 4th position while Kia (+4.3%) ensures the Top 5 is unchanged on 2021. Dacia (+34.9%) is the best performer in the Top 10 and gains three spots on last year to land at #6. Ford (+5.1%) also improves, BMW (-5.8%) maintains its loss below the market rate but Peugeot (-36.1%) and Mercedes (-10.9%) struggle. Below, Cupra (+250.2%), Ssangyong (+129.9%), DS (+74.3%) and Lexus (+60.2%) stand out.
Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (-0.7%) manages to stabilise its sales and reclaims the top spot it held back in 2020 off the Skoda Fabia (-14.9%). The Octavia has now been the best-selling vehicle at home for 13 of the past 14 years, a streak that started in 2009. The Hyundai i30 (-20.1%) climbs onto the year-end podium for the second time ever after 2012. The i30 is the only foreign model in the Top 8 as Skoda places a record 7 nameplates in the Top 8, something it also did in 2019 and 2020. However only the Superb (+24%) and Kodiaq (+1.2%) score good results, with the Kamiq (-34.7%), Scala (-24.8%), and Karoq (-17.7%) all in freefall. The Hyundai Tucson (+2.1%) and Kia Ceed (-1.9%) are relatively stable and round out the Top 10. The Dacia Jogger (#20) is the best-selling 2022 launch.
