Hungary April 2020: Toyota (+5.9%), Dacia (-2.2%) defy market down -50.3%

The Dacia Lodgy is the most popular vehicle in Hungary in April.

The Hungarian new car market is down a relatively reasonable -50.3% year-on-year in April to 6.170 units, leading to a year-to-date volume down -16.9% to 38.840. This is one of the smallest declines in Europe, with only Norway (-34%), Denmark (-37%), Sweden (-37.5%) and Finland (-39.1%) doing better so far. Toyota (+5.9%) goes completely against the market and posts the only year-on-year gain in the Top 10, reaching 12.3% share vs. 11% so far in 2020. Dacia (-2.2%) also vastly outpaces the market with a tiny loss leading to a 2nd place overall for the month with 11.7% share vs. 9.4% YTD. Skoda (-46.3%) is down to #3, Volkswagen (-30.1%) up to #4 while traditional leader Suzuki (-78.9%) craters to a paltry 7th place. Renault (-27.9%) and Mercedes (-37.7%) also shine in the Top 10, while Ssangyong (+121.1%), Tesla (+55.8%) and Citroen (+2.6%) are also up further down.

Model-wise, the Dacia Lodgy easily scores a third consecutive win at 6.5% share, cementing its YTD leadership at 4.7% of Hungarian sales so far in 2020. The Skoda Octavia (-51.8%) is back up to the 2nd spot it holds YTD with the Toyota Corolla up 3 ranks on March to climb back onto the podium for the third time this year. The Renault Clio (+15.9%) is actually up year-on-year at #4, distancing the leader of the past 4 years, the Suzuki Vitara (-75.6%) now also only 5th year-to-date. The Dacia Duster (-49.1%) follows the market at #6 while the Toyota RAV4, VW Golf and Ford Tourneo Custom point their bonnet inside the Top 10.
