Czech Republic November 2019: Skoda Kamiq breaks into Top 10 in market up 4.6%

The Skoda Kamiq scores its first Top 10 finish at home.

The Czech new car market gains a solid 4.6% year-on-year in November to 20.163 units, yet it’s not enough to catchup on a stronger 2018 year-to-date tally with 2019 down -6.3% to 231.208 so far. Homegrown brand leader Skoda (+8.3%) easily outpace the market to reach a gargantuan 38.2% share vs. 34.8% year-to-date, yet it’s its first month below 40% since August. Hyundai (+17.8%), Volkswagen (+10.9%) and Ford (+22.3%) also gain market share in the remainder of the Top 4, as do Porsche (+185.7%), Mazda (+81.6%), Seat (+40.6%), Renault (+40.5%), Audi (+22.2%), BMW (+16.6%) and Mercedes (+15.3%) further down.

Model-wise, the Skoda Octavia (+8.4%) and Fabia (-7.4%) remain head and shoulders above the rest of the market, with the new Scala falling back below 1.000 monthly sales in third place. At #4, the Hyundai i30 (+28.8%) is the only foreign nameplate in the Top 7 just as the Skoda Karoq (+84.3%), Kodiaq (-37.2%) and Superb (+27.9%) follow. There are 7 Skodas in the Top 9 – a record according to our files – now that the Kamiq has advanced 3 spots on last month to break into its home Top 10 for the first time at #9. As a reminder Skoda has managed to place 6 nameplates in the monthly Top 6 three times before: in May 2017January 2019 and September 2019, and we should logically be headed towards a record 7 in 7 if the Kamiq continues to gear up. The Hyundai Tucson (+86.8%) and Dacia Duster (-24.2%) complete the Top 10 with wildly different behaviours, while the VW Tiguan (+195.2%), Ford Kuga (+260.2%) and VW Passat (+41.3%) lurk just below.
