The Argentinean new car market gains 9.4% year-on-year in May to 82.706 registrations, the second best ever score for the month after May 2013 (89.644), lifting the year-to-date volume up 18% to 431.479 units, an all time record after five months, eclipsing the previous best of 422.225 established in 2013. Volkswagen remains the most popular carmaker in the country but is panting a little at just +3% whereas Renault soars 29% in 2nd place, distancing Ford (+4%), Chevrolet (-5%) and Toyota also impressive at +26%. Jeep (+131%), Nissan (+93%) and Chery (+41%) post spectacular gains in a Top 14 unchanged on April. Chinese manufacturers continue to gallop ahead, surging 94% to 1.212 sales and 1.5% vs. +54% and 1.1% YTD. Lifan (+81%), Dongfeng (+2580%!), Geely (+113%) and newcomers BAIC (#27), Great Wall (#38) and Haval (#43) are the best performers.
The Toyota Etios is the best-selling vehicle in Argentina for the second time in the past four months – and ever – after last February thanks to deliveries surging 51% year-on-year to 4.7% share, widening the small advantage it has over the #2 vehicle YTD, the Hilux (+22% in May) to 668 sales. The Ford Ka (-3%) drops two spots on April to #3, ahead of the Chevrolet Prisma (-2%) and Onix (-14%). The Fiat Argo is up 7 ranks on last month to easily break into the Argentinean Top 10 for the first time at #6, the VW Polo is up 8-fold on May 2017 to #9 thanks to the generation and the Renault Kwid is down 3 spots but remains inside the Top 10 at #10. Notice also the Fiat Cronos up 9 ranks to #13, the VW Virtus up 7 to #33 and the Chery Tiggo 2 (#178), Great Wall Wingle (#179) and Haval H6 (#188) making their first appearance.
