The Dutch new car market gains ground year-on-year for only the 2nd time so far in 2014 after last February, up 3% to 31,092 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to 166,428 units, down 5% on 2013. After spending March and April in 2nd place, the Renault Clio steps up to pole position this month in the Netherlands, its 2nd #1 ranking in the past 10 months, thanks to 1,416 sales and 4.6% share. It also ranks #2 year-to-date below the VW Golf, down to #3 this month like in April. The hero of the past 6 months, the Mitsubishi Outlander, misses out on the top spot for only 8 units, lodging another impressive 2nd spot in May with 1,404 units and 4.5%, now #6 year-to-date.
The Skoda Octavia confirms it has gone into another dimension in the Netherlands: whereas it ranked only #24 over the Full Year 2013, it remains 4th in May as well as year-to-date in 2014 with 1,113 sales and 3.6% and 4,766 and 2.9% respectively. The Renault Captur confirms it is force to be reckoned with, ranking #6 again and #7 year-to-date. The Seat Leon brilliantly breaks into the Top 10 at #10 vs. #24 year-to-date, the Peugeot 308 is up 30 spots on April to #13, the Volvo V70 up 11 to #23 and Mazda3 up 72 to #46.
Among recent launches, let’s notice the Mercedes GLA up 6 ranks on last month to #94, the Porsche Macan confirming its status as the brand’s best-seller at #124 and the BMW 2 Series at a relatively disappointing #135. Finally, we welcome two all-new models in the Dutch sales charts in May: the VW Golf Sportsvan lands directly at #154 with 17 sales while the Citroen C4 Cactus arrives at #172 with 11 units. Still small numbers but no doubt they will get bigger over the coming months.
