Sales of Kei cars in Japan are up a huge 32% year-on-year in January to 203,659 registrations. If the Daihatsu Tanto is the best-seller for the 2nd month running thanks to sales up 105% on January 2013 to 22,467 units, the big surprise of the month is the 2nd place of the Honda N-WGN for only its third appearance in the ranking with 17,855 sales. The N-WGN thus passes the N-BOX, down 24% to 15,551 units and now threatened by the Suzuki Wagon R at 15,327 sales (+9%).
The Nissan Dayz also shines, up 3 spots on December to 14.068 sales, while the Daihatsu Move, Mira and Suzuki Spacia all drop two ranks to #6, #7 and #8 respectively. We welcome two all-new models in the Kei car ranking in January: the very cute Suzuki Hustler landing directly at #10 thanks to 6,237 units sold, and its twin the Mazda Flair Crossover much less successful for now at #27 with 281 sales. Notice also the Nissan NV100 Clipper Rio, launched in December, at #25.
