As is the tradition on BSCB, after looking at the October best-sellers in China, we delve into the year-to-date models ranking a little deeper to extract longer term trends. The #1 market in the world is up a fantastic 13% so far in 2013 to 17.81 million units and well on track to break the 20 million units barrier before the year comes to an end, the first time any country in the world has ever managed that feat… In spite of holding onto the top spot for the last few month, the Wuling Hongguang is still #2 this year with 346,543 sales (+34%) below the VW Lavida at 373,224 (+91%), 47,989 of which are the Gran Lavida. Yes, you have read well, the VW Lavida would not be #1 nationwide without its hatchback/station wagon variant…

Ford Focus China October 2013. Picture courtesy of bitauto.com2013 Ford Focus sales are up 48% on 2012 so far in China.

…and it would not even be #2 but #3 behind the Ford Focus, in olympic form once again this year at +48% to 326,557 units. Let’s just pause for a moment to notice that after only 10 months in 2012, all Top 3 most popular models have all sold more than any other Passenger Car did in a Full Year in China since the invention of the automobile! The previous 3 best scores were the Wuling Hongguang at 316,237 over the Full Year 2012, the Ford Focus at 296,360 the same year and the BYD F3 at 291,010 in 2009. More analysis will follow shortly.

Ford Kuga China October 2013The Ford Kuga is the best-selling all-new model so far in 2013.

All other models sell less than 250,000 units over the first 10 months of this year, and there are a few clear winners inside the Top 20. Firstly the VW Sagitar (aka current generation worldwide Jetta), up 49% and 8 spots to a splendid 5th position with 229,748 units, the Nissan Sylphy up 89% and 20 ranks to land at #11 with 196,052 sales, the Buick Excelle XT/GT up 21% and two ranks to #12 and the Hyundai Elantra Langdong, launched in August 2012 and understandably up 285% to #13. But the most impressive is the Haval H6, more than doubling its sales (+110%) to arrive at #14 with 171,117 units and snapping the title of #1 SUV in the country away from the VW Tiguan (#15) and Honda CR-V (#16).

Honda CRider China October 2013. Picture courtesy of bitauto.comThe Honda Crider sold over 50,000 units in just 5 months.

The Emgrand EC7 also impresses and breaks into the year-to-date Top 20, up 32% and 6 ranks to #19 with 150,833 units, #3 Chinese model in the ranking. The new generation pushes the VW Santana up 63% and 15 spots to #22, but it’s word-of-mouth that is lifting the Hyundai ix35 by a fantastic 60% and 21 ranks to #26 this year… Launched in October 2012, the Kia K3 is no longer the best-selling all-new model but still ranks at an outstanding #29. The Great Wall Voleex C30 is up just 2% and the 4th Chinese inside the Top 30 at #30, followed by the Great Wall Haval M4 at #32 (+225%), BYD F3 Surui at #35 (+516%) and the DongFeng Future at #39 (+56%).

Citroen C4L China October 2013. Picture courtesy of this year, the Citroen C4L is already among the Top 100 most popular models in China.

The Ford Kuga now leads the all-new models charge at #54 with 75,567 units sold in 9 months, ahead of the ChangAn Honor at #61 with 70,828, the Hyundai Santa Fe at #70 and 59,805, Honda Crider at #77 and 52,240 (in only 5 months!), Buick Encore at #89 and 46,913, Ford Ecosport at #92 and 44,507, Peugeot 3008 at #99 and 41,620 and the Citroen C4L at #100 and 41,419 sales. That’s 8 all-new models inside the Top 100 (vs. none in the US over the same period!) out of 53 in total, keeping in mind this ranking only accounts for locally-produced models. At the same time last year there were 290 models produced and sold in China, now there are 339…

    1. Hey Fabian,
All the cars you mention are not produced in China and therefore do not appear in this ranking – as noted at the end of the table the ranking excludes imports.

  1. Many cars were reliable in the 80’s (beginning) Opel Kadett, Peugeot 504/505, Citroen CX, Ford Escort… Because almost no electronics and no DSG. But what is so funny, reading some VAG troll here, I just learn today VW recall 2.6 million cars worldwide due to various technical problems!

  2. @Fudan

I understand USA. Americans wants reliability more than anything else. See the rise of the Japanese and Koreans brands from the 80s until today. VW and Audi in USA have a fame of expensive and unreliable cars. VW isn’t so reliable as the Japanese/Koreans, that’s the reason why they can’t achieve the success of the Asians in the USA. As simple as that.

  3. VW has long tradition on Chinese market. Who came first and were persistant have bigger piece of cake. Now GM(Buick, Chevrolet, Wuling, Cadillac…) is also very strong. Ford is growing fast! I believe that Japanese will be much better soon, last year political crisis between two countries destroyed their market share!
Does anyone has any experience with HAVAL H6? It looks that this SUV has future on world’s scene!

  4. @Bryan
Hi Bryan. Don’t underestimate the Chinese customers. Buying a car is a huge, huge thing for them. For many Chinese it is the first car they ever possess. They are very quality, image and price sensitive. Most of customers are paying cash carrying buckets full of Yuan to the dealers. So, having such a great success in the biggest car market in the world, does tell a story about a company.

USA is a totally different story. Infamous Ferdinand Piech (The Godfather) just recently said: “We understand Europe, we understand Brazil, we understand China… but we have no clue about how to sell cars in the USA”

The old boxy Santanas and Jettas from the 80s were so incredibly succesful over decades, because they were cheap, easy to fix, had a low fuel consumption and were running mile after mile after mile. All the taxi drivers in Eastern China will give you two thumbs up (while driving!) if you ask them if they are satisfied with their VW.

  5. @Fudan

Chinese people will buy VW no matter what. Even a completly outdated car like VW Santana (a Passat from the 80s!!) sold very much until the last year. VW was one of the first Occidental car makers to entry in the Chinese market.

For example, in USA, VW sells half than Hyundai and Kia. So will you say that Hyundai and Kia are better than VW? I don’t think so. The sales don’t indicate the quality of the brands.

The sales indicate the quality of the management in certain markets.

And it’s curious that you talked about Renault, Renault-Nissan is doing very well, they post sales record in 2012 and they are the 4th biggest Auto Group in the World. And don’t forget that Renault is not yet present in the two largest auto markets, China and USA (they will start manufacture in China in 2014). Renault-Nissan is one of the better managed Auto Groups in the World.

  6. ok ok ok… not everything works well at VW 😉 : I just read in the news that they are recalling 2,6 Mio (!) cars because of technical problems. DSG, motor oil and headlamps.

  7. Thanks for those figures!

I was wondering: is there any sales figures of the DS line in China? Until now they were imported, but since the end of september the production of the DS5 started locally if I am correct.
I was looking at October and as well the top selling cars over the last 10 months in China but couldn’t find – maybe it sold too low.
It will be interesting to see how Citroën will manage to introduce this new premium brand, especially with a vehicle like the DS5 which is not the classic long Sedan the chinese market could await of a premium car…

  8. Fudan and Pedro, itookashi… Same VAG troll? Why always bashing this way? Anyhow, Fudan, you are right, VAG is not reliable, look at the DSG scandal recently.

  9. Wow. These numbers are truly breathtaking. 20 Mio cars sold by the end of 2013?! Incredible!

I really don’t want to push this boring discussion about PSA/Renault vs. VW that is going on here in the comment section…
but whoever is questioning the success of VW’s sales-, brand-, design-, price-strategy, whoever thinks VW’s are not reliable, whoever is thinking people are just to stupid if they buy a VW… look at these numbers.. and think again.

    Greetings Everyone 🙂
