As is the tradition on BestSellingCarsBlog, every Quarter I offer you an All-models ranking for the UK, which I have to say is a breath of fresh air for me also, in a market that usually only disclose a monthly Top 10. So let’s get right into it and go well beyond the familiar Top 10 to notice the Land Rover Freelander up to a brilliant #25 with 5,850 sales and 1.5% to be compared to #57 over the FY2012, the Honda Civic up to #30 (vs. #42), Toyota Auris up to #38 (vs. #76), Ford B-Max up to #40 (vs. #121), the Vauxhall Mokka landing at #44 with 4,501 units and 1.1% for its first full Quarter in market, Suzuki Alto up to #45 (#95) and Jaguar XF up to #46 (#55).

Beyond the Top 50, let’s salute the Range Rover starting to see the effects of its new generation, up to #78 with 2,254 sales vs. #113 in 2012, the Skoda Rapid crawling its way inside the Top 100 (just) at #99 with 1,459 units,  the Vauxhall Adam at #120, Mitsubishi Mirage at #131 and Fiat 500L at #138. But the big event is the arrival of the two Dacia models launched in January: the Duster ranks directly #110 at 1,237 units (in-between the Toyota Prius and Volvo V60) and the Sandero is #134 with 741 sales, behind the Audi A7 and above the Peugeot RCZ. A solid start for the low-cost brand in the UK.

Vauxhall Mokka UK March 2013Vauxhall Mokka

Further down, the Seat Toledo progressively makes its way up the ladder, now #161 vs. #187 in Q4 2012, the Mini Paceman makes its first appearance in the ranking at #188, as do the Mercedes Citan at #257, Vauxhall Cascada at #265, Ferrari F12 at #293 and the Mercedes CLA-Class at #294…

Yeah … the Freelander performance sure is a puzzle so late in its life.

But in all reality the stand-out UK performer has got to be the Vauxhall Antara! This model is already well into its 6th year and is due to be replaced in 2014.
    2011 full-year total – 1,200
    2012 full-year total – 7,500
    2013 first quarter – 3,860 ALREADY!

By contrast, the Mondeo (also in its run-out year) has only shifted 2,610 units to date!
    Mondeo-man has become QashQai-mom!

    Interesting – thank you. ;o)

Separately, only 15 Chrysler/Lancia Delta sold in 3 months and 60 Fiat Bravo! Seems mid sized Italians sell badly – as indeed elsewhere outside Italy and Brazil.
Would the Delta have sold more badged as a Lancia rather than a fake Chrysler? I think so personally.

  3. AndyT :Not sure I agree that the UK is a different market to elsewhere in Europe, despite the power of Ford and Opels rebadged as Vauxhalls.VW is third best selling brand with two models in the top 10 and is very strong. I believe the VAG combined brands are number 1 in the UK above Ford or GM too.

I just had a look to the the UK-sales january – april 2013.

VW-group: 150.287 (VW, Audi, Skoda, Seat, Porsche, Bentley)
    Ford: 106.525
    GM-group: 90,996 (Vauxhall, Chevrolet)

  4. Can anyone explain why the Freelander has boomed? For such an old project, it is an incredible performance. With the Freelander and the Evoque in the Top 30, the Land Rover guys must be celebrating!

  5. (continued) Renault also own about 20% of Volvo Trucks and are involved in the decision making process, but as in the Nissan case, I don’t think you can really say that Volvo Trucks is part of the Renault Group.

  6. @Ed
I hear what you’re saying, but although Renault pretty much call the shots at Nissan, I don’t think that you can say that Nissan is really integrated in the Renault Group as, say, Opel in GM.

  7. @Carson
Actually the British market is relatively similar to the overall European market – German, Japanese and Korean companies have comparable %s in Britain and Europe, but American companies do better in Britain than other European markets in the detriment of French and Italian companies.

Here are stats regarding the performance of national automotive conglomerates I compiled using data from this blog: (I use the term national, but these companies are not actually owned by governments)

In the UK, full year 2012:
German conglomerates (VW, Daimler, BMW) 33,48%
    French conglomerates (Renault, PSA) 10,46%
    Italian conglomerates (Fiat) 3,13%
    American conglomerates (GM, Ford) 25,8%
Japanese conglomerates (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, …) 15,19%
    Korean conglomerates (Hyundai-Kia) 6,89

    In Europe, full year 2012:
German conglomerates (VW, Daimler, BMW) 36,06%
    French conglomerates (Renault, PSA) 20,27%
    Italian conglomerates (Fiat) 6,45%
    American conglomerates (GM, Ford) 15,88%
Japanese conglomerates (Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mitsubishi, …) 12,17%
    Korean conglomerates (Hyundai-Kia) 6,33%

  8. Thanks Matt and Moe, Renault is still struggling but improved in April so maybe a change in fortune, the Clio IV only came on to the British market in February and the Captur is just about to, the excellent BMW 3 Series has slipped (strange), good to see Honda improving, Dacia could be very big here, the Mondeo seems to have had its day.

  9. Not sure I agree that the UK is a different market to elsewhere in Europe, despite the power of Ford and Opels rebadged as Vauxhalls.
VW is third best selling brand with two models in the top 10 and is very strong. I believe the VAG combined brands are number 1 in the UK above Ford or GM too.
Surely Ireland with its love of saloons/sedans, such as the Renault Fluence set it apart from most of Western Europe.
The Uk’s love of hatches, VAG and increasingly the Koreans makes it typically European?

  10. The UK is an interesting market. Quite different to anywhere else in Europe. Ford and GM have huge share whereas VW must have one of its lowest %.

  11. @Ben

    That’s a lomg story, really 😉
Renault used to rank among the top 3 UK importers for decades.

After taken beatings year after year, the skipped half the model line-up last year.
With the new Clio & Captur, they are hoping for a resurrection.
UK April carsales have been published today:
Renault is up almost 50% (2000 -> 2900 units) and, remarkably, Dacia from zero to 2000 units.

Total UK market was up 14% in April. Another bumper month for Audi, PSA, Ford, Vauxhall.

  12. Hopefully Renaults fortunes will change as the year carrys on, The stunning looking Clio should become more established a new Captur SUV is due soon which should help the figures.
Ford Mondeo is 69th!!! back in the 90’s it was in the top 3 selling cars shows just how much the market has altered and become so fragmented. It doesn’t look good for the upper medium segment as Focus Astra etc are the same size as a previous Mondeo/Vectra etc. and crossovers, SUVs etc seem to be in place of saloons.

  13. According to these sales figures, the Kia Optima is almost nonexistent in the UK, yet in the movie Skyfall I saw a police Optima. Product placement?
