German new car sales are reassuringly back in positive territory in April, up 4% year-on-year to 284,444 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 958,401 units, still down 9% on 2012 however. After a 4 month-hiatus, Volkswagen is back to monopolising the monthly podium again, placing the Golf at #1 and 8.1% share followed by the Polo at 2.7% and the Passat at 2.4%. The best performer this month is the Audi A3, up 4 spots on March to land in 4th place with 6,677 sales and 2.3%, its highest ranking since December 2010! The Mercedes E-Class also shines, up 11 ranks to #9 at 5,150 units and 1.8%, its first time in the Top 10 since November 2011.
The VW Up! is back up 12 spots to land in 12th position with an excellent 4,743 sales and 1.7%. After the Skoda Octavia peaked at #9 in March, this month no foreign model manages to rank within the German Top 20. The Octavia leads the charge again at #21 followed by the Skoda Fabia (#23), Fiat Ducato (#24) more than ever boosted by motorhome sales, Seat Ibiza (#29) and Seat Leon/Altea/Toledo (#30).
The two new Opels continue to progress, both reaching best-ever rankings this month: the Mokka is up 6 ranks to #29 while the Adam is up 12 to #37. The Dacia Sandero new generation has struck a chord with German consumers: it is up 22 spots to #39 with 2,139 sales and should rank much higher in the private sales charts. Notice also the Peugeot 208 up 15 ranks to #43, the VW Beetle up 19 to #46 and the Mercedes CLA up a whopping 65 spots to #61.
Further down, the Mitsubishi Mirage is up 49 ranks to #80 and the Opel Cascada up a round 100 ranks to #117. We welcome three new models in the German ranking this month: the Peugeot 2008 at #204 with 101 sales, the Renault Zoe at #255 and 28 units and the Chevrolet Trax at #266 with 21 sales.
