Spain 1995: Ford topples Renault to #1 brand, places Escort and Fiesta on top

Ford Escort

New car sales in Spain drop -8.5% year-on-year in 1995 to 825.777 units. After at least a decade of unchallenged domination, Renault (-16.9%) is toppled by Ford (-6.8%) for the brands top spot at 13.9% vs. 14.5% share. Opel (-15.1%), Seat (-5.4%), Peugeot (-11.9%) and Citroen (-15%) ensure the remainder of the Top 6 is unchanged on last year. Volkswagen (+15.1%) and Audi (+17.6%) swim upstream to rank #7 and #10 respectively. Korean brand Daewoo lands directly at #17. Ford (+1.9%) also takes control of the LCV brands ranking, toppling Nissan (-5.5%) with Citroen (+1.6%) overtaking Renault (-8.1%).

Model-wise, Ford justifies its newfound brands domination by monopolising the Top 2 with the Escort (-10.6%) #1 for the 2nd straight year and the Fiesta (-2.4%) up two spots to #2, the two nameplates being separated by just 443 units. The means the Opel Corsa (-11.6%) is knocked down to #3, while the Seat Ibiza (+4.8%) is up two ranks to #4, the Renault Clio (-12.3%) remains at #5 and the Opel Astra (-21.9%) is down 3 spots to #6. The Peugeot 306 (-4.8%) and Citroen ZX (-8%) both overtake the Renault 19 (-16.9%), the Fiat Punto (+17%) breaks into the Top 10 for the first time at #10, the VW Polo (+334.4%) is up 22 spots to #16 and the Audi A4 lands at #22. In the LCV ranking, the Citroen C15 (-8.7%) is back above the Renault Express (-15.9%).
