Mini Monaco 2014The Mini is the most popular model in Monaco in 2014.

* See the Top 237 All-models Ranking by clicking on the title *

After exploring in detail exclusive brands data for über-wealthy Monaco, it’s now time to discover the best-selling models in the Principality. Monaco displays a unique set of best-sellers due to the exceptional disposable revenue of its inhabitants. The Mini regains its throne despite sales down 12% and is followed by 3 nameplates with the same sales figure: the Audi A3 (-27%), Porsche 911 (+9%) and Range Rover Sport up 4-fold on 2013 thanks to the new model.

Porsche Cayenne Macan Monaco 2014The Porsche Macan and Cayenne are both inside the Monaco Top 10 in 2014!

Porsche places two additional nameplates in the Top 10 this year, a feat it understandably only achieves in Monaco: the Cayenne is down 20% to #9 and Macan lands directly at #10 with 55 units sold. Mercedes has 4 nameplates inside the Top 20: the S-Class is the German manufacturer’s best-seller here, followed by the A-Class, C-Class, E-Class and B-Class.

Maserati Ghibli Monaco 2014The Maserati Ghibli is inside the Monaco Top 30 in 2014.

Other extraordinary rankings include the Bentley Continental GT at #22 with 1.1% market share, the Maserati Ghibli at #29 with just under 1% share, Bentley Flying Spur at #32, Ferrari 458 Speciale at #40, Porsche Boxster at #52, Ferrari California at #54, McLaren MP4-12C at #65, Rolls-Royce Ghost at #69, Rolls-Royce Wraith at #73, Jaguar F-Type at #79 and the Ferrari LaFerrari landing directly inside the Top 100 at #94 with 6 units finding a buyer for its first year in market.

Bentley Flying Spur Monaco 2014The Bentley Flying Spur is up to #32.

Even though it is nestled within France and minutes drive from Italy, there are no Renault, Peugeot, Citroen or Fiat dealerships in Monaco: such cars need to be purchased in France, then registered in the Principality. As such, the 500 (#6) is the only Fiat in the Monaco Top 50 and the Peugeot 308 is the best-French car at a low #27, followed by the Peugeot 208 (#38) and Renault Clio (#39). This means such luxury models as the Porsche Macan, Bentley Continental and Range Rover outsell all French nameplates here, and the Maserati Ghibli and Bentley Flying Spur outsell them all bar one.

Exclusive to BestSellingCarsBlog and for the third year in a row I can share with you new car sales data for the Principality of Monaco, always fascinating to follow as the wealth of its inhabitants makes for very exotic brands and models rankings. The brands ranking comes first, detailed models ranking will follow shortly. Once again, even so the Principality is nested within France, its new car market evolves in a disconnected way to its big brother in 2014: down 5% year-on-year to 2,438 registrations whereas France is actually up 0.3%.

Big movement atop the Monaco brands ranking: thanks to sales up another 4% after gaining 20% in 2013, Mercedes becomes the most popular marque in the Principality with 393 units and 16.1% share. Audi is knocked down to 2nd place, down a harsh 31% on a year ago to 11.6% share, while Porsche is getting dangerously close in third position with 8.9% (+17%). Volkswagen (+10%), Land Rover (+35%) and Peugeot (+24%) also shine in the Top 10.

Selling exactly the same amount of cars as in 2013, Ferrari evolves at heights reserved to mass-market manufacturers in 99% of other countries in the world: at #12, same goes for Bentley at #14… Further down, notice Jeep up 164%, Rolls-Royce up 44%, Maserati up 29% and Bugatti selling two units this year, vs. none in France.

New car sales in Monaco are up 6% year-on-year in 2013 to reach 2,556 registrations, and now is the time to share with you an exclusive models ranking for the Principality, you won’t find this anywhere else! Always a fascinating and very unique ranking due to the extraordinary wealth of Monaco’s inhabitants. Thanks to sales up a huge 65% on 2012 to 109 units for a 4.3% market share, the Audi A4 becomes the most popular model in the country this year, making Monaco the only country in the world to crown the A4. It kicks the Mini, #1 in 2012, the Audi A3, #2 last year and the Smart Fortwo (#3) to #2, #3 and #4 respectively.

Mercedes A Class Monaco 2013. Picture courtesy of largus.frMercedes A Class sales in Monaco are up 159% on 2012!

Another huge performer this year in Monaco is the Mercedes A-Class up 12 spots and 159% on 2012 to land in 5th place with 83 sales and 2.9% share. Porsche staggeringly places two models inside the Top 7 like last year: the Cayenne at #6 with 2.7% share and the 911 at #7 with 2.6%… Notice also the Toyota Yaris up 64% to #12, Range Rover up 81% to #13, Audi Q5 up 57% to #15, Porsche Boxster up 191% to #18, Audi Q3 up 55% to #19 and the Mercedes GL up 525% to #25. The Mercedes CLA is the best-selling all-new model this year, landing directly at #48.

Rolls-Royce Wraith launch, Vienna, September 2013Two Rolls Royce Wraith found a buyer in Monaco in 2013.

The two main spectacular characteristics of the Monaco models ranking is the absence of French cars at the top in spite of the Principality being nested within France (the French best-seller is the Renault Clio at #32) but this is compensated by the other striking element of the ranking: the presence of prestige cars very high up. Below the two Porsche mentioned above, we find the Bentley Continental GT at an out-of-this-world #14 with 1.4% share, the Ferrari 458 at #26, Ferrari F12 at #31, Lamborghini Aventador at #85, Maserati Quattroporte at #96 and Rolls Royce Phantom at #102. We also welcome the Aston Martin Vanquish at #121, Maserati Ghibli at #154 and Rolls Royce Wraith at #184.

Twice a year I share with you exclusive new car sales data for the Principality of Monaco, and the time has come for Full Year 2013 reports! Be sure you won’t find these figures anywhere else than on BSCB… Monaco is a fascinating car market to follow indeed as the wealth of its inhabitants makes for very exotic brands and models rankings. While the country is nested within France, the Monaco new car market evolves in a distinctly different way in 2013: up 6% year-on-year to 2,556 registrations. Audi remains the most popular carmaker in the Principality thanks to sales up a very solid 10% to 412 units for a 16.1% market share, while Mercedes is catching up, gaining an astounding 20% year-on-year to reach 378 sales and 14.8% share vs. 13.1% in 2012.

Amazingly, Porsche manages to maintain itself on the podium (yessir) at #3 in spite of sales down 4% to 185 units and 7.2% share. It is followed by Volkswagen, BMW and Mini all losing ground on 2012, whereas Toyota (+17%), Land Rover (+35%) and Fiat (+46%) all make significant progress. An anomaly always interesting to notice in Monaco is the particular weakness of French manufacturers, due to the fact that none of them has a dealership in the Principality: Peugeot is nevertheless up 16% and two spots to #11, Renault is down 3% to #12 and Citroen down 13% to #16. Among other mass-market brands, notice Opel up 106% to #19, Hyundai up a round 100% to #21 and Dacia up 78% to #27.

Rolls Royce Phantom Monaco 2013. Picture courtesy of rickphotography1995Rolls-Royce sales are up 23% in Monaco this year. © Rickphotography1995

If there was one country in the world where prestige brands should do well it would be Monaco, and it is the case. Ferrari was among the 10 best-selling carmakers here halfway through the year, it is now down to a still very impressive #13 and 2.1% share over the Full Year, Bentley is up one spot on 2012 to #15 and a huge 1.8% market share, Aston Martin is up a whopping 192% to #18 with 1.4% share, Maserati is up 50% to #24, Rolls-Royce up 23% to #28 and Lamborghini up 22% to #31.

After giving you a Top 43 All-brands ranking for the first 6 months of the year, I can finally share with you an exclusive All-models ranking for the Principality of Monaco, one of the richest countries on the planet. You won’t find this anywhere else on the web! New car sales in Monaco are up a very healthy 9% year-on-year over the period to 1,404 registrations. There is a new leader in the models ranking: the Audi A4 is up a gargantuan 325% year-on-year to take the lead thanks to 68 sales and 4.8% share, kicking the Mini down to #2 at 59 units and 4.2% (-14%) while the Audi A3 is up 21% but is down to #3 with 57 sales and 4.1%.

Porsche 911 Carrera 997 Monaco 6 months 2013. Picture courtesy of FlickrPorsche 911 Carrera (997). Picture courtesy of Gaetan, all rights reserved.

Excellent performance of the Mercedes A-Class boosted by the new model: it is up 71% year-on-year and 12 spots on its FY2012 ranking to land in 5th place with 36 units and 2.6%. The Porsche 911 is up 29% to #6, ahead of the Porsche Cayenne (-20%) while the new generation pushes Range Rover sales up 244% and 30 ranks to #8 and 2.2% share. Audi places 3 models inside the Top 10 with the A1 up 60% and 12 spots to #10.

Ferrari F12 Monaco 6 months 2013. Picture courtesy of FlickrFerrari F12 and Lamborghini Aventador. Picture courtesy of dadiferrari, all rights reserved.

The Bentley Continental drops out of the Top 10 but still ranks at an out-of-this world #11 thanks to 24 sales and 1.7% share. But wait there are more prestige cars in the Top 20: there are actually two Ferraris inside the 18 best-sellers, incredible as this may sound… The Ferrari 458 Italia/Spider is up 5% to #14 at 1.4% share while the all-new Ferrari F12 lands directly at #18 with 18 sales and 1.3%.

Notice also the Porsche Boxster up 567% to #15, the Audi Q5 up 58% to #16, Audi Q3 up 80% to #17, Mercedes GL up 500% to #29, Mercedes GLK up 120% to #34, Toyota RAV4 up 267% to #35, Mercedes CLS and SL both up 100% to #43 and #44 respectively and the Lamborghini Aventador up 500% to #55.

Twice a year I can share with you exclusive sales data for the Principality of Monaco, you won’t find this anywhere else than on BSCB! For now a brands ranking, with the models ranking following shortly. While most of the European continent was in recession over the first half of 2013, Monaco is an island of health/wealth with new car sales up 9% year-on-year over the period to 1,404 registrations. At the same time last year Mercedes was the dominant brand in the Principality followed by Audi, but in 2013 Audi takes control as it did over the Full Year 2012 thanks to sales up a whopping 29% to 221 and a gargantuan 15.7% market share, kicking Mercedes down to #2 in spite of sales up 6% to 184 units and 13.1%.

Porsche Panamera Monaco 2013. Picture courtesy of Stephan FlischPorsche Panamera. Picture courtesy of Stephan Flisch, all rights reserved.

As unbelievable as it seems, Porsche is once again the third most popular brand here with 96 sales and 6.8% of the market, by far its highest ranking and share anywhere in the world. But it is not the only manufacturer to achieve world-best scores in Monaco as you will see further down… BMW is catching up though, up 11% and 2 spots on the same point last year to #4 and 6.5%, passing Volkswagen (-4%) and Mini (-18%) while Toyota (+25%), Land Rover (+20%) and Fiat (+50%) follow and all lodge great gains.

Bentley Mulsanne Monaco 2013. Picture courtesy of Seber GiesbersBentley Muslanne. Picture by Seger Giesbers, all rights reserved.

It did it: #11 last year, Ferrari manages to break into the Monaco Top 10 most successful brands thanks to sales up a massive 28% year-on-year to 46 units for a 3.3% market share. Like over the Full Year 2012, Ferrari outsells all French manufacturers even though Monaco is nested within France: Peugeot is #12, Renault #16 and Citroen #17. Note none of the French carmakers have bothered opening a dealership in the Principality, so all French cars registered in Monaco had to be bought in France.

Aston Martin One-77 Monaco 2013. Picture courtesy of Seber GiebersAston Martin One-77. Picture by Seger Giesbers, all rights reserved.

There are two more prestige brands in the Top 15 believe it or not… Bentley continues its love story with Monaco, ranking at an incredible 13th place like last year with 29 sales and 2.1% while Aston Martin is up a crazy 317% and 13 spots year-on-year to land in 15th position at 25 units and 1.8% share…

Rolls RoyceMonaco August 2013Rolls-Royce more than doubled its Monaco sales over the period!

Further down, notice Rolls-Royce more than doubling its sales year-on-year and up 6 ranks to #26 and 0.8% share, Infiniti up 350% to #28, Maserati up 14% but down 4 spots to #31, Lamborghini up 133% to #33 and 0.5% and Bugatti making a come-back in the ranking at #39 with one car sold. Other big if less exotic gainers include Hyundai up 250% to #18, Opel up 300% to #21 and Dacia up 83% to #23.

Monaco August 2013: Millions on display – Photo report

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Monaco August 2013Good old me with a Ferrari F12 Berlinetta in Monaco – picture by my dear dad.

After Italy yesterday and while we feverishly await for the First Half 2013 sales figures for the Principality, I have the pleasure to share with you today my Photo report of Monaco, or more precisely the “Place du Casino” I had the privilege to visit yesterday, arguably the location with the biggest concentration of prestige and supercars in the world…

Ferrari California Rolls Royce Phantom Monaco August 2013bFerrari California and Rolls-Royce Phantom in Monaco, August 2013.

And in that area I wasn’t disappointed! Still very rare in the sales rankings, two Ferrari F12 Berlinetta were on display only metres from each other, gently accompanied by a Ferrari California and a Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider. And that’s only the ones parked as many more were doing the rounds while my dad and I were busy taking pictures…

Ferrari F12 Berlinetta Rolls Royce Corniche Monaco August 2013Ferrari F12 Berlinetta and Rolls-Royce Corniche in Monaco, August 2013.

Rolls-Royce is also very well represented, both with current models (Ghost and Phantom) but also older ones: there were two Corniche driving around and showing off while I was there…

Bentley and Casino Monaco August 2013The Casino reflects into the bonnet of a Bentley Continental GTC, Monaco August 2013.

If you are a regular reader of BSCB you will know the love story that exists between the Principality of Monaco and Bentley. If not, one figure is enough to understand this phenomenon: the Bentley Continental is the 9th best-selling model in Monaco in 2012 with 1.9% market share! It’s as if Bentleys are the default car in the place. For lack of imagination, choose a Bentley!

Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider Monaco August 2013Ferrari F430 Scuderia Spider in Monaco, August 2013. Picture by my dear dad.

BMW Z8 Monaco August 2013bMove along Pierce Brosnan, this BMW Z8 is mine! (I wish) Picture by my dear dad.

I was amazed to see a very rare BMW Z8 discreetly parked, it even looked exactly like the one Pierce Brosnan was driving in the 1999 James Bond movie “The world is not enough”. How I dreamt of that car…

Dacia Sandero Monaco August 2013Wait – is that a Dacia Sandero among all the Bentleys? Yes, Sir! Picture by my dear dad.

A few surprises too, some of which won’t be if you are familiar with the 2012 best-sellers in the Principality: lots and lots of Smart Fortwo, a couple of Renault Twizy, the French completely under-represented apart from a Dacia Sandero looking a little out of place!

Monaco Full Year 2012: Mini and Audi A3 on top, Porsche Cayenne and Bentley Continental in Top 10!

I am now able to share with you an exclusive models ranking for Monaco: you won’t find this anywhere else on the web! The Mini is the best-selling model in the Principality with 137 sales and 5.7%, up 41% year-on-year – however note it is unclear how many Countryman this figure includes. The Audi A3 ranks #2 at 91 units and 3.8% with the Smart Fortwo rounding up the podium with 86 sales and 3.6%.

Mini Paceman

The Top 10 is filled with prestige cars: the Porsche Cayenne is up a whopping 55% on 2011 to reach an out-of-this-world 4th place at 79 units and 3.3%, the Porsche 911 is up 38% to #7 and the Bentley Continental up an amazing 61% to break into the Monegasque year-end Top 10 at #9 with 45 sales and 1.9% share…

Audi A3

Notice also the Audi A1 up 64% to #5, Porsche Panamera up 193% to #12, Mercedes M-Class up 175% to #15, Ferrari 458 Italia up 146% to #16, Range Rover Evoque up 200% to #21, Audi A6 up 127% to #24, Audi Q3 up 567% to #33, Lexus RX up 122% to #34, BMW X6 up 33% to #39, the McLaren MP4-12C increasing its sales 4-fold to 12 units at #49 and the Mercedes SLS up 50% to #50…

Porsche Panamera. Picture by Calians Sevan, all rights reserved.

Even though Monaco is nestled within France, French carmakers are not successful in the Principality, with only two models managing to rank within the year-end Top 50: the Peugeot 208 landing directly at #40 and the Renault Megane at #44. This is to be compared with… 33 German models in the Top 50!

Rolls-Royce Ghost. Picture by Tom Stamp Photography, all rights reserved.

Notice also the Porsche Boxster up 450% to #57, the Rolls Royce Ghost up 67% to #59, Bentley Mulsanne up 133% to #73, the Fisker Karma making its first appearance in a Monaco year-end ranking at #103, the Ferrari F12 selling its first 3 units at #130 and the Koenigsegg CCX appearing at #204 with one unit sold.

Thanks to a secret admirer of BSCB, I can share with you an exclusive all-brands ranking for the Principality of Monaco, one of the richest countries in the world. The all-models ranking will follow soon. BSCB is the only place online to give you detailed sales info about Monaco, always a fascinating market to follow as prestige brands are at their world best here. New car sales are down slightly in 2012 to 2,402 registrations (-5% on 2011), but far from the drama in neighbouring France (-14%) and Italy (-19%)

After a 2011 ranking biased by the royal wedding that put BMW at #1, 2012 is back to ‘normal’ in the Principality. Well that is, if you consider Audi, Mercedes and Porsche being the most popular carmakers a normal situation. #2 halfway through the year, Audi benefits from a very strong 2nd half to take the lead with 373 sales and 15.5% share.

Audi R8. Picture by Loic Parent, all rights reserved.

Mercedes follows suit with sales up 3% also to 315 units and 13.1%. But the best performance in the Top 10 is delivered by Porsche, up a massive 71% and 3 spots to climb onto the year-end podium thanks to 193 sales and 8% share… BMW comes back to earth, down 55% and 3 ranks to #4, while Volkswagen at #5 (+8%) and Mini at #6 (-2%) both fall back one spot. Land Rover (+7%) and Fiat (-23%) round up the Top 10.

Ferrari Enzo. Picture by Willem Rodenburg, all rights reserved.

Outstanding performance of Ferrari, up a formidable 27% year-on-year to land in 11th place at 62 units and 2.6%, by far its best result in the world. Ferrari now outsells all French manufacturers, with Renault at #12, Peugeot at #13 and Citroen at #14. This is an amazing feat as Monaco is nestled within France and culturally considered as part of the country, with the Monaco soccer team evolving in the French championship for example. However none of the 3 French carmakers have a dealership in Monaco, which makes it harder for them to compete here.

Bentley Muslanne. Picture by kaboem, all rights reserved.

Among the brands doing extremely well in Monaco this year, a large majority belong to the prestige segment. Bentley is up a whopping 63% year-on-year and 4 spots to #16 with 52 sales and 2.2%, just below Ford and double the score of Nissan and Kia… Rolls-Royce is also up 63% to #28, McLaren up a huge 300% to #30 with 12 units sold and Lamborghini up 125% to #33 at 9 sales. Fisker (4 units) and Koenigsegg (one) are new in the ranking.

If last year the ‘true’ first place (below the Royal Wedding BMW 7 Series) was a very close race, in 2012 it is a little more spread with the podium composed of posh small cars. The Mini takes control with 69 sales and an excellent 5.4% share, up from 3.8% in 2011. It is followed by the Smart Fortwo at 57 units and 4.4% and the Audi A3 at 47 sales and 3.7%. Now the posh minis are out of the way, let’s talk business…

Porsche confirms it is now the third most popular brand in the country by placing no less than 3 models in the Top 10! Only in Monaco… The Porsche Cayenne pulls an astounding 4th place thanks to 41 sales for a 3.2% market share, up from #9 and 2% in 2011, the Porsche 911 ranks #8 with 28 units and 2.2%, up from #10 and 1.7% and the Porsche Panamera delivers a spectacular 9th position with 25 sales and 1.9% share, up from #39 and 0.6% last year

But wait there’s more: now that Bentley is the #13 brand in Monaco, it is logical (if not totally surreal) to see the Bentley Continental ranking at a cool #6 with 29 sales and 2.3% share. And also logically (why not?), it’s the more expensive Continental GTC version, starting at US$235,000, that sells the most with 16 units, vs. 10 for the GT and 3 for the Flying Spur… So even without the Flying Spur, the Continental GT/GTC alone would rank #9…

And below, the amazement continues. The Ferrari 458 Italia is up from #43 in 2011 to #13 with 19 sales and 1.5%, triple its 2011 market share, while the Ferrari California up to #42 and the Ferrari FF up to #47.

Now get this: the McLaren MP4 12C is up to a unheard of 39th place with 9 units sold for a 0.7% market share, same as the Ford Fiesta and Toyota Yaris and more than the Renault Scenic, Nissan Qashqai or Fiat Panda… Interestingly, while Mercedes is now the best-selling brand in the country, its sales are spread across many models and as a consequence the best-selling Merc, the A-Class, is ‘only’ #11, followed by the B-Class at #12.

Fisker Karma in Monaco, August 2012

Among the newcomers in the ranking, we welcome the Fisker Karma at #67 with 4 sales, the Chevrolet Camaro and the Citroen DS5 both with 2 units sold, and the Koenigsegg CCX, Nissan Leaf and… Lada Niva with one sale each.

US$550,000 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe in Monaco, August 2012.

Even though Monaco is nested within France, there are no Citroen, Peugeot or Renault dealerships in the country and as a result French models generally deliver very shy performances. Case in point: there are none in the Top 30 and only 4 of them in the Top 50 over the first 6 months of 2012, with the Renault Megane the best-seller at #34, followed by the all-new Peugeot 208 at #40, the Renault Scenic at #44 and the Citroen C4 at #49.

Renault Twizy

In fact, if it wasn’t counted as a quadricycle, the Renault Twizy would top French models by far, with 16 units sold this year – which would place it at #17 along with cars like the Audi A4, Mercedes C-Class and Range Rover Sport…
