Car sales in South Africa are up 5% year-on-year in March to 56,110 units, bringing the year-to-date total to 156,701 registrations, up 6% on 2011. Like last month and over the Full Year 2011, the Toyota Hilux is the best-selling vehicle in South Africa with 3,189 sales and 5.7%, ahead of the VW Polo Vivo at 5.1% and the VW Polo at 4.2%, making the podium identical to 2011′s and the 2012 year-to-date ranking.

Nissan NP200

The Toyota Corolla/Auris is back up to its traditional 4th place, followed by the Nissan NP200 (aka Dacia Logan Pick-up) equalling the best-ever position in the country (and in the world) it had reached last January at #5 and 1,829 units. The best performer this month is without doubt the locally-produced new generation Ford Ranger, up a massive 18 spots to land in 6th position with 1,753 sales and 3.1%. It is now #12 year-to-date vs. #21 in 2011.

The Ford Ranger definitely deserves to be among the Top 10. Ford developed a great product and they are reaping the reward. Their competitors will no doubt up their game with future models, but it might be too little too late. Is the Ranger the new Hilux?
