Canada June/Q2 2026: Toyota(+12%), Volkswagen (+26.2%) stand out

VW Tiguan sales triple year-on-year over Q2.

According to local consultancy DesRosiers Automotive, new light vehicles sales in June end a streak of 8 consecutive year-on-year declines with a 1.9% uptick to 182,000 units, with one extra selling day. The SAAR stands at 1.84 million, here too stopping a negative trend since the 2.08 million of last January. Sales over Q2 edge down -1%  to 527,289 with H1 volumes off -0.8% to 948,977. However DesRosiers has the market drop -2.6%, with light trucks down -2.1% and passenger cars off -6.6%.

In the OEM charts over Q2, General Motors (+0.8%) keeps the lead but Toyota Motor (+9.1%) is catching up, delivering the second best YoY lift among main OEMs below the VW Group (+9.7%). Meanwhile Hyundai-Kia (-1.8%) and Ford Motor (-0.8%) resist but Honda Canada (-5.7%) and more strikingly the Nissan Group/Mitsubishi (-15.5%) disappoint. Stellantis (-1.3%) is encouraging.

Brand-wise, Toyota (+12%) lodges a splendid YoY gain and grabs the overall pole position off Ford (+0.7%). For its part Hyundai (+0.3%) overtakes Chevrolet (+0.5%) for third place with Honda (-4.9%) rounding out the Top 5. Volkswagen (+26.2%) delivers by far the biggest uptick near the top whereas Nissan (-17.6%), Mazda (-17.4%), Mitsubishi (-12.5%) and Subaru (-10.6%) are hit the hardest. Jeep (+10.1%) and Ram (+9.3%) are both very strong, with Tesla (+28.1%), Buick (+15.4%) and Dodge (+12.7%) also standing out below.

Looking at models, the Ford F-Series (+3.7%) keeps the lead with almost 34,000 sales, while the Toyota RAV4 (-12%) reclaims the second sport despite a sizeable year-on-year fall. The Honda CR-V (-4.9%) closes out the podium while the GMC Sierra (-7.9%) drops to #4 vs. #2 over H1. The Chevrolet Silverado (-13.8%) follows in bad shape. Reversely, we have excellent showings by the Kia Sportage (+29.3%) cracking the Top 10, the Hyundai Tucson (+25.7%), Nissan Rogue (+22.6%) and Ram Pickup (+15.3%).

  1. It’s interesting how poor Tesla sales are in Canada. If Canada has 25% tariff on American production, Canada is dependent on a fully loaded European factory. But delivery times in Europe are several months. Canada can only import 49,000 of any cars from China and then the tariff is 100%. That is why the Chinese invasion isn’t happening.

    1. The Model Y is the bestselling EV in Canada. But Canada has cheap oil and very long distances so not the ideal market for EVs.
