Chile April 2024: Market ends 20-month loss streak, bounces back up 30.6%

Suzuki is the best-selling carmaker in Chile for the first time in over 2 years.

After 20 consecutive months of year-on-year falls, the Chilean new light vehicle market bounces back up 30.6% year-on-year in April to 25,490 sales. Note April 2023 was off -48.4% on the year prior. The year-to-date tally is down -12.9% to 96,582 units. This month, Passenger Cars are up 8.8% to 5,426, SUVs up 27.6% to 11,979, pickups up 70.6% to 5,412 and vans up 35.2% to 2,673.

Brands-wise, Suzuki (+60.2%) signs its first monthly win since December 2021 with a dominant 7.9% share. It advances to #3 year-to-date as a result. Toyota (-10.4%) is relegated to 2nd place with a very disappointing performance. Hyundai (+40.8%) is up two spots on last month to #3 while Chevrolet (+9.5%) is down two to #4. Mitsubishi (+333.8%) and GWM (+188.7%) score surreal gains in the remainder of the Top 10 with Ford (+69.3%) and Peugeot (+38%) also above the market growth rate. The Chinese contingent, up to 29 brands this month, is up to 30.9% share with sales up 57.1% year-on-year.

Over in the models ranking, the Toyota Hilux (+2.1%) is the best-seller for the 4th time in the past 7 months, distancing the YTD leader the Mitsubishi L200 (+1209.6%) by 43 units. The Suzuki Swift (+64.9%) is up two spots on last month to #3 ahead of the Ford Ranger (+177.8%) up seven and the Maxus T60 (+185.1%) up five. The GWM Jolion (+153.5%) and GWM Poer (+68.4%) also beat the market among the remaining Top 10 models.
