Norway Full Year 2022: Tesla Model Y beats VW Beetle’s 53 year old record, BEVs hold 79.3% share

Despite a last minute surge in December to an all-time record 39,497 sales (+92%) as sales were pulled forward due to impending tax changes, the Norwegian new car market is in negative in 2022. It edges down -1.1% on a record 2021 to 174,329 units. Norway remains the kingdom of eco-friendly vehicles with sales of electrified cars up 0.6% to 162,613 and 93.3% share vs. 91.7% in 2021. This is to be compared with 83.4% share in 2020, 68.3% in 2019, 60.2% in 2018, 52.2% in 2017, 40.2% in 2016 and just 7% in 2012. BEVs are the main force driving the electrification of Norway with sales up 21.6% to 138,292 and 79.3% share vs. 64.5% in 2021, 54.3% in 2020 and 42.4% in 2019. Note BEVs reached 82.8% share in December thanks to 32,714 sales. PHEVs sink -61.1% to 14,848 and 8.5% share vs. 21.6% last year and HEVs edge down -3.1% to 9,473 and 5.4% share vs. 5.5% in 2021. Petrol sales fall to 3.6% share vs. 4.2% in 2021 and diesel is down to 3.1% share vs. 4% last year.

Over in the brands ranking, Tesla (+4.4%) repeats at #1 with 12.2% share vs. 11.6% a year ago, holding up Volkswagen up a very satisfying 19.2% to 11.6% share vs. 9.6% in 2021. Note Volkswagen was still #1 year-to-date at end November. BMW (+26.2%) lifts up two spots to #3, leapfrogging past Toyota (-12.2%) and Volvo (-6.3%) both in difficulty. Mercedes (+16.7%) leaps three ranks to #6, passing Audi (-0.3%), Skoda (+0.3%) and Ford (-42.6%). Hyundai (+4.3%) and Kia (+1.8%) close out the Top 10 in positive. Norway has been a port of entry for Chinese EV brands eager to sell on the European continent. BYD (+149.1%) is up seven spots to #17, Hongqi ends its first full year in market at #20, NIO (+467.5%) is up to #25, Xpeng is up to #27 and Voyah lands at #31 thanks to a splendid December score (#20 with 1% share).

Model-wise, the Tesla Model Y (+109.9%) more than doubles its sales year-on-year to take charge with a round and stunning 10% share for the year. The Model Y has the most annual sales recorded by any new model in Norway at a little bit more than 17,350 units. This was a 53 year-old record, previously held by the VW Beetle with 16,699 sales back in 1969. The VW ID.4 (+33.7%) has received a very warm welcome in Norway and ends the year at #2 ahead of the Skoda Enyaq (+32.3%). The luxurious BMW iX (+692.3%) finishes its first full year of sales at a remarkable 4th place overall with the Volvo XC40 (-14.3%) rounding out the Top 5 like last year. The Hyundai Ioniq 5 (+41.8%) is up six spots to #6, the Audi Q4 e-Tron (+54.1%) is up 9 to #7 and the Polestar 2 (+14.4%) up one to #9. #1 in 2021, the Tesla Model 3 (-73.8%) completely implodes to #16.
