Germany November 2022: Fiat 500 and Tesla Model 3 on podium, market up 31.4%

The Fiat 500 lineup is up to a record 2nd place overall in Germany.

New car sales in Germany soar soars 31.4% year-on-year to 260,512 units, catching up on a low year-ago comparison base (less than 200,000 sales). However the year-to-date tally remains in negative at -2.4% or 57,000 sales to 2,337,039. The German market will now likely fall to its worst annual volume in 37 years: since the 2,379,261 units of 1985. Devastated by the microchip crisis a year ago, Volkswagen (+58.3%) is reinvigorated to 18% share, roughly the same level as year-to-date. Mercedes (+34%) also beats the market at #2 with 10.6% share, its highest this year, vs. 9.2% YTD. Audi (+109.1%) spectacularly rallies back up to return to its 2022 YTD level at 8.5% vs. 8.2%. BMW (+13.4%) is shy in 4th place while Ford (+54.3%) ensures the Top 5 brands remain unchanged on last month. Tesla (+92.7%) surges up 10 spots on October to #8 with 4.2% share. Cupra (+248.7%) outsells Seat (-1.1%) for the 2nd straight month and the 2nd time ever. Polestar (+613.2%), DS (+301.4%), Maserati (+210.3%), MG (+123.6%), Jeep (+86.3%) and Dacia (+83.3%) shine below just as GWM makes its first appearance in the charts.

Model-wise, the VW Golf (+120.7%) retains the top spot but at 2.7% share, it is just 166 sales above the Fiat 500 lineup (+75.9%) up to a record 2nd place overall. This is a tremendous achievement for the Fiat which holds 86% of the brand’s volume for the month. The Tesla Model 3 (+78.1%) is up 33 spots on October to end the month just 222 sales from the #1 rank. The VW Tiguan (+204.8%) is down two ranks to #2 with the Ford Kuga (+108.3%) rounding out the Top 5 and making sure the 5 best-selling models vastly outrace the market. The Tesla Model Y (+116.4%) is up 31 spots on last month to #7 while the Mercedes A-Class (+66.5%) returns inside the monthly Top 10 for the first time since November 2020. Just outside the Top 10, the VW Passat (+61.2%), VW ID.3 (+138.6%), Audi A6 (+546.7%) and Toyota Yaris/Cross (+143.8%) stand out.
