As the Russian market continues to be devastated by economic sanctions, new car sales have stabilised around -82/-83% year-on-year with a June freefall of -82% to just 27,761 units vs. -83.5% in May. This brings the H1 2022 tally to 370,228 units, down -57.5% year-on-year when including all brands that only communicate quarterly results such as BMW, Mercedes and Chery among others. Lada (-81.3%) and Kia (-80.3%) roughly match the market atop the charts with Lada commanding a mammoth 27% share, its highest in over 10 years. Two categories of manufacturers fare a lot better than the market this month. Firstly local LCV specialists GAZ (-41.6%) up to a record third place and UAZ (-43.8%) at #7. Secondly Chinese carmakers. Haval (-53.3%) is up to an all-time best 6th place with 5.9% share, almost double their YTD level of 3.1%. After hitting a record 7th place last month, Geely (-50.4%) is down one to a still splendid #8. Changan (-13.5%) and FAW (-46.2%) also stand out further down. All-in-all, Chinese brands hold a 12.3% market share for the month vs. 10.6% so far this year, keeping in mind Chery (#11 YTD) isn’t included in the June results.

Over in the models ranking, the Lada Granta (-76.6%) hits its highest ever market share at 11.9%, smashing its previous best of 10% hit back in June 2015. The GAZ Gazelle (-46.4%) is up to a best-ever 2nd place overall, dislodging a freefalling Lada Vesta (-85.2%). The Kia Rio (-81.4%) and Hyundai Creta hold onto their May positions at #4 and #5 respectively. The big surprise of the month is the Haval Jolion (-1.6%) almost stable year-on-year and surging 10 spots on last month to a record 6th place overall. This is the first time a Chinese model manages to rank inside the Russian Top 10 as it eclipses its previous best ranking of #12 hit in November 2021. The UAZ Classic Commercial (-28%), GAZ Sobol (-14.8%), Geely Coolray (-51.2%), Hyundai Tucson (-29.9%) and Geely Tugella (+102.4%) and UAZ Profi (-23.1%) all resist markedly better than the market further down the charts. Finally, notice the Haval F7 and F7X break into the Russian Top 30 for the first time.
