Finland January 2022: Toyota hits record 22% share, monopolises Top 4 in market down -16%

First podium finish for the Toyota C-HR in January.

The Finnish new car market skids down -16% year-on-year in January to just 7,778 registrations. Toyota (+12.3%) is the big performer this month, improving its market share to 22% which is believed to be an all-time record for the Japanese brand. With less than half the volume of Toyota, Volvo (-19.1%) is in difficulty in contrast with the evergreen Kia (+27%) albeit down from a historical top spot in December. Skoda (-42.8%) and Volkswagen (-29.8%) both implode while Opel (+9.3%) and BMW (+6.3%) also defy the negative market in the remainder of the Top 10. Further down, Porsche (+522.2%), Land Rover (+184.6%) and Jeep (+162.5%) stand out. #6 in December, Tesla is booted out of the Top 30.

Justifying its record share, Toyota monopolises the Top 4 models with the Corolla (+23.3%), RAV4 (-2.6%), C-HR (+109.9%) and Yaris (-47%) in the lead. The C-HR lands its first ever podium finish in Finland, its previous best being #5 in May 2020. The Volvo XC60 (-6.3%) is the best of the rest above a bruised Skoda Octavia (-60.3%) and a euphoric Kia Ceed (+239.3%). The Ford Kuga (+194%) also shows outstanding form at #10. There are five recent launches in the Top 35: the Toyota Yaris Cross at #9 for its first Finnish Top 10, the Hyundai Ioniq 5 at #13, the Kia EV6 at #23, the Volvo C40 at #28 and the Skoda Enyaq at #32.
