New car sales in Austria drop -24.5% year-on-year in 2020 to 248.740 units. Volkswagen (-27.3%) sees its market share fall slightly at 15.4% but remains by far the most popular carmaker in the country. The podium is unchanged on 2019 with Skoda (-13.5%) at #2 and Seat (-19.7%) repeating at a record third place. BMW (-17.4%) overtakes Ford (-27.6%) to snap the 4th place overall, ending the year just 81 sales below Seat. Renault (-23.8%) remains in 6th place while Hyundai (-22.6%) and Mercedes (-14.8%) both advance spot to #7 and #8 respectively. Audi (-12.8%) scores the best hold in the Top 10 and is up two ranks to #9. Tesla (+8.9%), Land Rover (+0.9%) and Porsche (+0.3%) score the only gains in the Top 30.

In the models ranking, the Skoda Octavia (-24.5%) repeats at #1 with a 3.2% share again, it ranked #1 four times this year vs. five last year. This is only the second year in the past 43 that the VW Golf (-23.1%) isn’t #1 in Austria. Like in 2019 it must settle with 2nd place, and ranked #1 three times. The Golf has however reduced its deficit with the Octavia from 1.480 sales to less than 1.000 in 2020. The Skoda Fabia (-12.4%) posts the best hold in the Top 6 and advances three spots to #3 as a result. Fiat 500 sales now include the 500L and 500X and as such the 500 Family (-21.2%) ranks #4 vs. #5 in 2019. Quite spectacularly, Volkswagen monopolises the rest of the Top 9 with the Polo (-34.2%), T-Roc (-41.5%), T-Cross (+20%), Bus (-32.8%) and Tiguan (-30.1%). This also means the VW Group places 8 models in the Top 9 and were the Fiat 500 sales counted separately it would monopolise the Top 8 for the first time in history. Notice also the Tesla Model 3 up 23.5% and 32 spots to #19, ranking #1 in March and #2 in December and the VW ID.3 #1 in December.
