The Chevrolet Onix is the best-selling vehicle in Paraguay in 2019.
New light vehicle sales in Paraguay sink -20.8% year-on-year in 2019 to 28.437 units, with vans (+11.7%) and minibus (+8.6%) the only segments in positive but representing just 1.4% and 0.6% of the market respectively. Pickups are hit the hardest at -36.1% to 6.167 and 21.7% share vs. 26.9% a year ago, SUVs dive -16.7% to 8.708 and 30.6% vs. 29.1% in 2018 and passenger cars unusually resist best at -15% to 12.974 and 45.6% vs. 42.5% a year ago. Trucks drop -8.4% to 2.298, bringing the overall market down a round -20% to 30.735.
Chevrolet (-25.3%), Kia (-27.9%) and Toyota (-27.9%) keep the brands podium identical to 2018 but all fall faster than the market. That’s not the case of Hyundai (+9.4%) swimming upstream with a sturdy gain and up to #4, overtaking Volkswagen (-21.6%). Jeep (-5.3%) advances two spots to #8 while Isuzu and Renault both break into the Top 10, knocking Suzuki and Ford out. When adding 408 trucks, Kia is the best-selling brand in Paraguay for the 10th year in a row, something it hasn’t achieved in any other market in the world.
Model-wise, the Chevrolet Onix (+3.1%) steps up two percentage points of market share on last year to hit 8.7%, easily snapping the pole position ahead of the VW Gol (-12.5%) also up one spot and the Kia Picanto (-9.9%) up two. It’s a bad year for pickups in Paraguay and the Toyota Hilux (-38.1%) endures a ghastly fall to go from #1 in 2018 to #4 this year while the Chevrolet S10 (-45.9%) loses even more ground but drops just one rank to #5. The Hyundai Creta is up 21.3% to #8 and the Hyundai HB20 (#7) and Nissan Kicks (#10) break into the Top 10 for 2019.
