Pakistan January 2020: Toyota Corolla surprise leader in market crumbling down -47.2%

The Toyota Corolla is #1 in Pakistan for the first time since last June.

Thanks to PAMA we have access to sales of locally-produced models in Pakistan which gives a pretty accurate picture of the best-selling nameplates in the country as high duties limit the number of new cars imported. The Pakistani market continues to implode in January at a ghastly -47.2% year-on-year to 11.901 units. Suzuki (-52.7%) falls slightly faster than the market and is down to 46.7% share vs. 59.4% over the FY2019. In contrast Toyota (-35.6%) improves to 33.8% vs. 25% while Honda (-51.1%) is at 18.6% vs. 15%. Model-wise, there’s a surprise on top: even though the Toyota Corolla secured an 11th consecutive win in 2019, it had not topped the monthly charts ever since the new Suzuki Alto stormed into the Pakistani market last July. But after 4 consecutive month of local production outstripping local sales (totalling 17.068 vs. 12.509) the penny had to drop at some point, and this month – even though the new generation isn’t available in Pakistan yet – the Toyota Corolla (-35.6%) shoots back up to pole position with 28.9% share vs. just 15.1% for the Alto.
