Czech Republic January 2020: Skoda hits highest market share in over 13 years (43.3%) in stable market (-0.8%)

The Skoda Kamiq repeats at a record 6th place in January.

New car sales in the Czech Republic keep their year-on-year drop to a minimum in January at -0.8% to 19.132 registrations. Homegrown behemoth Skoda (+20.7%) starts the year all guns blazing and delivers its highest market share at home in over 13 years at 43.3% – the last time Skoda did better at home was in November 2006 (43.9%). Skoda also smashes its previous 10-year bests of 41.1% in September 2018 and 40.3% in September 2019, to be compared to the 34.4% annual share Skoda held over FY2019. Below Volkswagen (-11.8%) in great difficulty at #2, we have a very impressive string of five consecutive carmakers delivering double-digit year-on-year improvements: Hyundai (+29.7%), Kia (+15.5%), Toyota (+11.8%), Mercedes (+24.9%) and BMW (+41%). In contrast, Dacia (-57.6%), Peugeot (-28.8%) and Renault (-20.4%) are annihilated this month. Further down, Porsche (+58.3%), Fiat (+52.6%), Seat (+30.4%) and Jeep (+22.1%) shine but Nissan (-77.2%), Mazda (-57.7%), Suzuki (-44.5%), Mini (-41.9%), Ford (-40.4%), Subaru (-38.7%), Opel (-35.4%), Lexus (-35.4%), Honda (-33.3%) and Citroen (-31%) all implode.

Model-wise, strikingly the entire Top 14 is in positive, led by the Skoda Octavia (+18.7%) and Fabia (+18.5%) with the Hyundai i30 (+67.3%) lodging the largest year-on-year gain in the Top 8 and the only non-Skoda in there at #3. The Skoda Scala is back up 3 spots on December to #4, distancing the Karoq (+37.3%), Kamiq repeating at a best-ever #6, Superb (+7.7%) and Kodiaq (+10.2%). The Hyundai Tucson (+116.3%) and VW Tiguan (+56.8%) close the Top 10 in spectacular fashion, while the Seat Arona (+314.6%), Toyota Corolla (+155.8%) and Kia Rio (+89.6%) impress in the remainder of the Top 20.
