New light vehicle sales in Mexico endure a 12th consecutive month of year-on-year decline in May at -6.8% to 114.503 registrations, with the year-to-date volume now down 8.9% on the all-time high established at the same time last year to 561.041. Once again brand leader Nissan falls much faster than the market at -14% to a still very dominant 21.9% share vs. 22.8% so far this year. Chevrolet resists well at -1% to 16.8% share this month, almost three percentage points above its YTD level of 14.1% (-19%). Volkswagen (-22%) posts the steepest decline in the Top 20 but Toyota shines with a 3% year-on-year gain. Kia continues to markedly slow down its gains: from +37% in January to +19% in February, +13% in March, +4% in April and a very slim +0.1% in May. Sister brand Hyundai does a lot better at +12% but falls one spot to #8. Mazda (+3%) is the only other Top 10 carmaker in positive, while Ford (-11%), Honda (-9%) and Dodge (-6%) all lose ground. Further down, notice Land Rover (+144%), Volvo (+119%), Suzuki (+62%), Lamborghini (+50%), Subaru (+29%), Infiniti (+25%), Lincoln (+23%), Peugeot (+21%), Alfa Romeo (+20%), BMW (+12%) and Mitsubishi (+11%) all going against the grain and posting spectacular year-on-year improvements.

Note that similarly to GM in the US, Acura, Honda, Nissan, Renault, Seat and Volkswagen have stopped sharing models sales detail for Mexico so we have estimated their sales this month. This month the Nissan Versa (-5%) reclaims the top spot it holds year-to-date off the Chevrolet Beat despite an estimated drop, with the Chevrolet Aveo (+1%) and Nissan Pickup (-15%) following and holding onto their April ranking. The Nissan March (+13%) is back above the VW Vento (-22%) with the Honda HR-V surging 18% to break into the Mexican Top 10 for the very first time, nudging the Chevrolet Cavalier out (#11). The Honda CR-V (-50%) pays the price. We welcome the Alfa Romeo Stelvio at #197.
