Chile January 2018: Market up 29.3%, Chinese carmakers up 71%

Maxus sales are up 7-fold on January 2017 thanks to the arrival of the T60 pickup.

The Full Year 2017 Report has now been updated with Full Year models data.

New car sales in Chile shoot up 29.3% year-on-year in January to 35.322 registrations. Passenger cars are up 18.7% to 14.055, SUVs surge 46.1% to 12.573, pickups are up 29% to 5.336 and commercials are up 22.9% to 3.358. #2 in FY2017, Chevrolet takes the lead of the brands ranking this month but advances at half the rate of the market at +14% to 8.3% share above Hyundai slower too at +11% to 8%. Suzuki soars 37% to 7.8% in third place while Toyota jumps 43% to 7.5% at #4. Kia is up 9% but down three spots on December to #5 and Nissan, leader a year ago in January, edges down 0.3% to 7.3% share. Mazda (+95%) and Renault (+73%) post the largest gains in the Top 10. Below, Chinese carmakers make the largest improvements: Maxus (+631%), Changan (+133%), Lifan (+120%), BAIC (+118%), ZNA (+100%), Dongfeng (+98%) and Chery (+89%) post stellar scores, with Chinese manufacturers as a whole up a stunning 71% to 12.3% share vs. 10.3% over the Full Year 2017. Skoda (+112%), Land Rover (+104%), Citroen (+77%), BMW (+66%), Chrysler Group (+66%), Volvo (+50%) and Mitsubishi (+44%) also make themselves noticed.

Model-wise, the Hyundai Accent is in the lead despite a 13% year-on-year drop, ahead of the Chevrolet Sail (+95%) and Toyota RAV4 (+35%). Leader over the Full Year 2017, the Mitsubishi L200 falls to #4 while the Kia Morning (-2%) rounds up the Top 5. Notice also the Renault Duster (+345%), Toyota Yaris (+72%) and Renault Symbol (+70%) posting spectacular gains. The Chery Tiggo2 (337 sales), JAC S2 (302) and Great Wall Wingle (151) are among the best-selling Chinese nameplates.
