Thanks to our partnership with CE Auto newsletter we can share with you today exclusive production and imports figures for Iran. 96.718 light vehicles were produced in Iran during the sixth month (Shahrivar) of the Persian year 1396, which roughly corresponds to September 2017, up 4% year-on-year which indicates a slowing down of the explosive growth we have seen so far in 2017. Year-to-date after nine months in 2017, Iranian light vehicle production is up 24% to 1.062.962 units. In the detail, passenger cars are up 5% in September to 90.759 with pickups down 9% to 5.959 while year-to-date passenger cars are up 26% to 1.011.062 but pickups are down 6% to 51.900.

Production of the Saipa Tiba/Saina is up 50% year-on-year in September.

Brand-wise, Peugeot cements its domination of the Iranian market with a 31.3% production share this month (+3%) vs. 30.6% so far in 2017. Saipa edges up 1% to 28.9% share, identical to its YTD level. Below, we have two surging manufacturers: Renault is up 29% to a splendid 12.2% share vs. 10.3% in 2017 (+63%) while Chinese Chery is up 38% to 6.1% vs. 4.7% so far this year (+42%). Both manufacturers benefit from the freefalling of Iran Khodro whose Samand has had its production interrupted and as a result plunges 74% to just 3% share this month vs. 10.4% year-to-date. At the end, Renault should pass Iran Khodro next month to end 2017 in third place. Notable improvers in the Top 10 also include Dongfeng (+351%) and Kia (+108%). All-in-all, 14 of the 24 brands produced in Iran this year are Chinese and their share is up to 17.1% thanks to volumes up 59% in September, to be compared with 14.4% (+88%) so far this year.

Local production of the Dongfeng S30 is up 468% year-on-year this month.

The Saipa Pride (a rebadged 1986 Kia Pride) remains the most produced (and best-selling) nameplate in Iran but is down 19% this month. It is followed by the 1998 Peugeot 206 (+3%), the Saipa Tiba/Saina (+50%) and the 1987 Peugeot 405 (+1%). All four nameplates were produced at more than 10.000 units this month. The Renault Tondar 90 (aka Logan) is up 22%, the Renault Sandero up 38% and the Iran Khodro Dena up 45%, while we welcome two Chinese newcomers in this month’s Top 10: the Dongfeng Fengshen S30 (+468%) and the new Chery Tiggo 3X at #10, up from #15 year-to-date. Six additional Chinese nameplates were produced at more than 1.000 units in Iran this month: the Brilliance H330, JAC S5, Chery Tiggo 3, Chery Tiggo 5, Haima S7 and Changan CS35.

The Renault Koleos is the best-selling import in Iran in September.

6.982 light vehicles were imported in Iran in September, lifting the year-to-date total to 67.745. Exceptional performance of the Renault Koleos this month: it is the #1 import with a 22.6% share vs. 2.9% and #16 so far this year. Renault manages to place three nameplates in the Top 4 imports: the Captur is up to #2 with 12.8% share vs. #3 and 6% year-to-date and the Talisman is up to #4 and 6.6% vs. #10 and 4.1% so far in 2017. The Nissan X-Trail also excels this month at #3. Leader in 2017, the Hyundai Tucson is down to #5 this month ahead of two crossovers: the Ssangyong Tivoli and Renault Duster. The Nissan Juke and Peugeot 508 also manage to crack the Top 10. Notice also the Toyota Prado (#15), Maxus V80 (#17) and MG GS (#18).
