Romania May 2017: Volkswagen up 76% in market up 27%

Excellent May results in Romania, with new car sales shooting up 27% year-on-year to 8.062 registrations, lifting the year-to-date tally up 23% to 36.978 units. Homegrown brand leader Dacia trails the market with a shy 10% gain this month leading to a 20.4% share, four percentage points below its year-to-date level of 24.4%. Reversely, Volkswagen delivers the largest year-on-year gain inside the Top 10, up a fantastic 76% to hit 12.7% share, overtaking Ford year-to-date to now rank #2 with a round 10% share. Ford (+32%), Mercedes (+35%), Hyundai (+52%) and Toyota (+56%) all brilliantly outpace the market in the Top 10. The best performers beyond include Porsche (+93%), Seat (+103%), Honda (+105%), Kia (+132%) and Citroen (+146%).

The Skoda Octavia is back on the Romanian YTD podium.

Over in the models ranking, the Dacia Logan (10.7%) and Duster (5.2%) post market shares that are significantly lower than year-to-date (13.2% and 6.3%). They are joined on the podium by the Skoda Octavia which reclaims the #3 spot year-to-date it held over the FY2016 off the Ford Focus, down 27% to #10 this month. The VW Polo is up 4-fold year-on-year and 5 spots on last month to #4, the Ford Fiesta is up 68% to #5 and the Renault Megane up 4-fold to #7 thanks to the new generation. Notice also the VW Passat up 59% year-on-ytear and 18 ranks on last month to #9, the VW Tiguan up 4-fold and both the Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga up 3-fold.
