The country’s very unstable political situation in July leads to new car sales imploding down 30% to 58.533 units,  sinking the year-to-date tally into negative territory at -4% to 497.350 – both these figures include light commercial vehicles. The Top 3 brands are hit even harder than the market: Volkswagen (9.084) and Ford (6.370) are both down 36% while Renault (6.274) is down 40% and Fiat (5.929) follows the market at -29%. Opel stuns with a 3% gain in 5th place, while Hyundai reduces its fall to -6% but Mercedes tumbles down 52% at #10. Seat (+11%), Kia (+24%), Suzuki (+3800%!), Land Rover (+56%) and Jaguar (+13%) are the only other manufacturer managing a Turkish year-on-year gain in July.

The race to the models pole position is at its tightest in Turkey this month, with just 15 sales separating the #1 the Opel Astra at 2.241 (1.701 sedans, 539 hatches and 1 station wagon) from the #3 the Renault Symbol at 2.226 (all sedan) with the all-new Fiat Egea sliding into 2nd place at 2.232 units (1.925 sedans and 307 hatches). Note this is the Egea’s best monthly ranking so far “at home” in Turkey where it is manufactured. Now that its replacement the Renault Megane sedan has been unveiled, the Renault Fluence is falling into oblivion, down 67% to just 1.029 sales at #16. The VW Passat is up 5 spots on June but down 26% year-on-year to #4, the Toyota Corolla up 6 but down 35% to #5, the VW Polo up 15% to #6 and the Hyundai i20 Troy up 13% to #8. Notice also the VW Jetta down 64% to #19, the Renault Clio down 71% to #20 and the Kia Cerato up a further 27 spots on last month to a record #33.
