Despite the further 8% devaluation of the Turkish Lira against both the Euro and US$ over the past month, the Turkish new car market still enjoys insolent year-on-year gains: another +37% in August to 82.577 registrations, lifting the year-to-date total to 598.963 units, up 51% on 2014. We announced last month that this extravagant growth rate may soon come to an end as carmakers start adjusting their prices up in line with exchange rates. As a large part of best-sellers in Turkey are manufactured locally, this adjustment process may take until the end of the year or even the start of 2016 to really be noticeable in the sales figures. In the brands ranking, both Volkswagen (16.4%) and Ford (12.4%) gain 49% to top the charts with Renault improving 56% (11.6%) but dropping one spot on July to 3rd place.
Dacia (+64%) jumps two ranks to 5th place, Mercedes (+68%) shines at #7, while Opel (+42%), Toyota (+46%), Peugeot (+69%), Jeep (+48%), Mazda (+172%) and Mini (+155%) all outperform the market. For the first time since October 2013, the VW Jetta is the most popular nameplate in Turkey, jumping 6 spots on July thanks to 3.077 deliveries, distancing the Renault Fluence (+2), Ford Transit/Tourneo Courier (+7), Ford Focus (+4) and VW Golf (+6). Leader year-to-date, the Fiat Linea is down 5 spots to #6, while the Toyota Corolla – #2 in 2015 – tumbles down 8 ranks to #11. The Mercedes C-Class (#17), Dacia Sandero (#18), VW Transporter (#20) and BMW 3 Series (#25) lodge solid performances.
