Encouraging signs for new car sales in Italy, up 5% year-on-year in November to 109,106 deliveries, tellingly lifted by private sales up 7% and bringing the year-to-date total to 1.277.435 units, also up 5% on 2013. Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, we are still evolving at historically low levels in Italy as 2013 was the weakest annual figure in 34 years (since 1979). The Italian car park has in fact been getting older: from an average age of 7.5 years in 2006 to 9.5 years today. Without any government support, UNRAE predicts Italian new car sales will not grow by more than 2.5% in 2015. Reversely, used cars are outperforming new cars by a 3.5-to-1 ratio and also growing faster: +7% to 372.943 sales in November.

Renault Captur Italy November 2014. Picture courtesy of quattroruote.itThe Renault Captur reaches its best-ever ranking in Italy this month.

Brand-wise, the Top 8 is identical to the YTD ranking, with Fiat (19.9%) and Volkswagen (7.3%) in the lead and Renault (+40%), Opel (+15%) and Toyota (+14%) the biggest gainers among them. Jeep is up a mammoth 247% on November 2013, Maserati up 204%, Lexus up 185%, Dacia is up 55%, Seat up 42%, Mini up 33% and Hyundai up 31%. In the models ranking, below the Fiat Panda stronger than ever at 8.3% share, the Fiat Punto reclaims the #2 spots it holds YTD thanks to sales actually up 25% year-on-year to 5,468 and 5% share, while the Lancia Ypsilon rounds up the podium but still ranks #4 YTD below the Fiat 500L down to #5 this month. The Ford Fiesta is in great shape at #4 and best-selling foreigner, the Fiat 500 is weak at #10 and the Renault Captur is up to a best-ever #11, only 221 sales off its first Top 10 Italian ranking.

Mini Countryman Italy November 2014The Mini Countryman still accounts for two-thirds of all Mini sales in Italy.

Below, things get a little agitated in the small SUV segment: while the Opel Mokka (#14) and Peugeot 2008 (#19) continue to deliver very solid results month after month and the Mini Countryman (#20) accounts for two thirds of the brand’s sales, they now have to deal with another contestant: the Jeep Renegade is up 31 spots on October to shoot up to a very impressive #25 ranking – already the highest position ever reached by a Jeep in Italy after only two full months of sales! This bodes extremely well for the Fiat 500X, built on the same platform, which should appear inside the Italian Top 10 very shortly. Finally, other great performers include the Audi Q3 up 11 spots on October to #32, the Peugeot 108 up 20 to #34 and the BMW 2 Series Active Tourer already almost inside the Top 50 at 566 sales.
