The Spanish new car market is moving the right way again in August at +13% to 45,497 registrations, however if last July was the best since 2009, this August is the best since… 2012 (48,497) and the third worst August score in the past 20 years below 2013 (39,954) and 2010 (45,003). Year-to-date, new car sales in Spain are up an encouraging 16.5% on 2013 to 584,432 units. Being traditionally the slowest month of the year due to Summer holidays, August triggers more volatile rankings. Brand-wise, Volkswagen cements its domination with sales up 36% year-on-year and 9% share ahead of Opel (+22%), Peugeot (+12%) and Ford (+50%) while Seat (+2%) and Renault (+17%) both drop 3 ranks on July to #5 and #6 respectively. Dacia is only 24 units below Renault and 44 below Seat (!), Kia is up 36% to #10, Mercedes up 40% to #12, Mazda up 99% to #18 and Mitsubishi up 86% to #20.
The Dacia Sandero flamboyantly takes the lead of the Spanish models charts this month thanks to 1,659 sales and 3.6% share, one percentage point above every other model on sale in the country bar one: the Seat Ibiza at #2 with 1,281 units and 2.8% and #1 year-to-date at 3.5% share. This is the 4th time in the past 20 months (and ever) that the Sandero tops the Spanish ranking after January, August and December 2013. Other great performers this month include the Opel Astra up to #5 vs. #12 year-to-date, the Toyota Auris up to #7 vs. #15, Hyundai ix35 up to #12 vs. #24, Kia Sportage at #15, Peugeot 3008 up to #18 vs. #28. Finally, the Mercedes GLA is up 18 spots to break into the Spanish Top 50 for the first time at #43 and the Macan confirms its status as Porsche’s best-seller, up 18 ranks to #131.
