Great news coming from Argentina: new car sales in the country are up a fantastic 28% year-on-year to 82,339 registrations, bringing the year-to-date total to a record 752,724 units, up 11% on 2012. Whereas last month was the first time since the two generations of Gol are counted separately (January 2011) that the Gol Trend topped the Argentinean sales charts, it reiterates this feat in September, even improving its market share to 4.3% thanks to a round 3,500 sales. The Gol Trend therefore goes from #4 to #2 in the year-to-date ranking at 25,337 units and 3.4%, still a fair distance off the traditional leader the Chevrolet Classic still going strong this month at 4%, adding up to 29,676 sales and 3.9% so far this year.

Chevrolet Tracker Argentina September 2013The Chevrolet Tracker is already inside the Argentinean Top 50.

The Peugeot 208 confirms it is a new serious contender to the title of best-selling car in Argentina in 2014 by consolidating the outstanding third position it reached in August with 2,806 units and 3.4%. Even though the new generation has not reached Argentinean shores yet, the Renault Sandero is up a further 4 spots on August to #4 vs. #13 year-to-date while the Clio Mio is stable at #5, the Duster is back up 8 ranks to #7 and the Logan up 3 to #17 vs. #34, making Renault the #2 brand in the country this month, only 363 unit off Volkswagen. Notice also the Chevrolet Onix up 10 spots to break into the Top 20 for the first time at #20, the Chevrolet Spin up 13 to #25, the Chevrolet Tracker breaking into the Top 50 for its 2nd month of sales at #49 and the Toyota Etios making its first appearance in the Argentinean ranking at #70.

  1. Roman :Wow! Big start for the Peugeot 208 (Itookashi & tengil should be mad If you add the old 207 and the 208, Peugeot reached the top 1(4517 sales). August and 2013 nowaday. (32593 sales)The Renault Duster is going well too, but I wonder why Sandero is going down…Anyhow, the Renault Clio Mio confirm.

These private statistics are quite funny. What about adding up VW Gol and Gol Power? Together 5.377 sales.

@ Roman: Do not forget VW-coampact-models like Vento, Bora or Voyage.

  2. @ Emi Ang: I knew something didn’t add up. Either Matt had made a miscalculation or the data was wrong. But adding all the numbers from the brand ranking YTD came to about 722.000, and I couldn’t believe these 30.000 sales ( or 5% ) was just “others”, because the lowest brand in the ranking had 2 sales.

PS: I don’t do these calculations for every post….. I just felt there was something missing here

  3. @Bart

I’m not Matt but the Acara report includes in the YTD number “Other heavy vehicles” (agricultural machinery?) but there is no detail of that 1.059 sales in the lists. I’m not sure where do you see 30.000 unaccounted sales.

About Seat, the brand leave the Argentinian market two years ago, that unit must be some forgotten car in a VW dealership. Maybe they could sold it because previous Seat generation looks newer than the actual VW generation.

    🙂

  4. So, after Seat with 1 sale this month, there is still around 1000 sales unaccounted for, but YTD there are more than 30.000 sales unaccounted for. Do you have an explanation for that, Matt?

  5. @Roman

That’s because the only Golf available is the overpriced GTI and pays import taxes, meanwhile the 308 is locally produced.
The one in good shape which also pays import taxes is the Bravo that comes from Italy, it’s a surprise that sales have doubled if you notice the poor sales for Fiat in that segment in Argentina.

  6. And an another funny thing :
    Peugeot 308: 1,518 sales
Volkswagen Golf : 4 sales (getting worst and worst)
Now we are waiting for trolls comments about that 😉

  7. Wow! Big start for the Peugeot 208 (Itookashi & tengil should be mad 🙂 If you add the old 207 and the 208, Peugeot reached the top 1(4517 sales). August and 2013 nowaday. (32593 sales)
The Renault Duster is going well too, but I wonder why Sandero is going down…
Anyhow, the Renault Clio Mio confirm.
