Another disappointing month for new car sales in India, down 8% year-on-year in July to 176,949 registrations, which brings the year-to-date total to 1,445,588 units, down 10% on 2012. The Maruti Alto is the most popular model in the country in July thanks to 18,206 sales and 10.3%, followed by the Maruti DZire (aka Suzuki Swift sedan), in great shape once again at 15,249 units and 8.6%, earning it a brand-new #2 spot year-to-date with 119,962 sales vs. 116,697 for the Maruti Swift, down to #4 this month below the Maruti Wagon R excelling at 13,409 units.
There are two big events inside the Top 10: the Honda Amaze is up 2 spots on June to a best-ever #8 and 6,515 sales, and the Ford Ecosport manages the impressive feat of breaking into the Indian Top 10 for its 2nd month in market thanks to 4,715 units and 2.7% share, hitting the Renault Duster full frontal (#18 at 3,089 sales). Notice also the Chevrolet Enjoy (aka Wuling Hongguang) down 4 spots to #26 and the Mahindra Verito Vibe – a Dacia Logan hatchback exclusive to India, landing directly at #43 with 683 sales.
