After giving us a little hope last month when it gained 21% year-on-year, Romanian new car sales are back to hell in May, down a horrendous 47% on May 2012 to 4,107 registrations which brings the year-to-date total to 20,582 units, down 21% on 2012. The Top 2 models stay unchanged vs. April and YTD: the Dacia Logan reigns supreme with 591 sales and 14.4% followed by the Dacia Duster at 268 units and 6.5%. The Dacia Sandero is up 8 spots on April to land in third position with an excellent 118 sales and 2.9%. This is actually the Sandero’s best ranking since I have had access to monthly rankings for Romania in January 2010. Given the Sandero finished 2009 in 2nd position overall it is safe to assume this is the nameplate’s highest position in 4 years…
Yes you have guessed it: for what could be the first time in the history of the brand at home, Dacia monopolises the monthly models ranking podium! But wait there’s more: the Dacia Dokker stays at a record 5th place at 111 units and 2.7%, making it 4 Dacias in the Top 5 for only the second time ever after last January… The VW Golf is the best-selling foreign model for the 2nd month in a row at #4 while the VW Jetta is up 5 spots to #8 and the Skoda Rapid up one further rank to a best-ever 9th place. The most spectacular progression however is delivered by the Fiat 500L: up 20 spots on April to a fantastic 11th position with 76 sales and 1.9%, making Romania the 500L’s best overseas country so far… Finally, notice the Toyota Aygo up 53 ranks to #19, the Mercedes A-Class up 30 to #32 and the Mercedes CLA up 43 to #57.
